Internet still slow after upgrading

Hi all, would appreciate some advice. Recently upgraded our internet packages speed and it didnt seem to make much of a difference. we went from 8mbsp to 15mbps. All we were looking to do really was speed up the internet for gaming. Yet no matter what i do to improve the internet (port forwarding, dmz, configuring firewall, static ip on the ps3..like everything) nothing works now recently i found out my modem has 2 modes.. a routed mode and a bridged mode. it is on routed mode. the modem is a Thomson Speedtouch ST516 v6 and it is connected to our dlink router. Am I supposed to switch the modems mode from routed to bridged? any other solutions anyone can think of?

If your Modem is Modem Router what do you need the D-Link for?

If you need it for Wireless configure it this way.

If you're on DSL, then 8Mbit may be as high as your line will go, and attempting to provision the line higher (and then having the modem re-train and sync downwards, may actually negatively affect your connection speeds.

ISPs love to sell "up to" speeds, even if your line can't handle them. It just means more money for them.

What specifically are you looking to improve? Most online games don't actually use that much throughput.

@Jack - The Speedtouch only has one port and does not have wifi capabilities. Ill give the link you sent a go. never tried it so ill let you know.

If you have a modem and router, the modem should be in bridged mode.

You would want to use the modem as a router if you have access to it and it's better than your current router.

I have an Arriss VOIP modem/router/wap and I have it just in modem mode. I am running a Cisco C819 ISR though.

I assume your issue is lag.

If that is the case, the "speed" of your internet connection does not impact this at all (well, so long as it is above whatever minimum is needed, and/or taking in to account any other load you have on your network, like someone else uploading/downloading a bunch of stuff at the same time as some one is gaming). It is all about your ISP's topography and the routers they have in place (as well as load in their network).

The only thing you can do to improve ping times is to switch ISPs or move.

If not tried, reset the modem or power cycle the modem to redo handshaking for the new speed.

DO NOT hard reset by hitting the hard reset (button usually needing narrow object). This will cause you to redo PPPOE or similar setup procedure again.
