Interview Situation

I'm on a team of 4 people and we pretty much cover eachother when one is out. There's not supposed to be more than 1 person scheduled to be out in one day. But two people already are supposed to be out...

One has a doctor's appointment and the other has a court date.

And I'm supposed to fly to Dallas for an all day interview and I haven't said anything to my boss (for 10/28). Basically we were told that our sick days are only for when we are actually sick (we were actually told that sick days were not to be used liberally) about a month ago.

If I was to use a sick day I'd probably be written up seeing as how I probably wouldn't look sick and I'm supposed to cover for these other people. Should I just come clean and tell my manager I actually have an interview? And I'm pretty close to the other people in my group (we actually all have lunch together pretty much everyday and hang out after work).

So use sick day or tell truth... how bad does saying your interviewing actually look? Haha this is my first job out of school.

Better idea: see if you can get the potential employer to reschedule. Why endanger your current paycheck?

Then take the sick day. Short of you having the most understanding boss in the world or your boss being very desperate for employees, nothing good could possibly come from telling him/her you have an interview and you're taking off on a day where the company is already short on workers.

The ethical thing to do would be to cancel your interview and wait until the next opportunity comes along.

Agreed. I would take the sick day and do your best on the phone "I'm sick" voice. I don't have any experience in that so i cannot give you any advice

"I'm not feeling good this morning, been getting sick all night. It might have been the seafood I had last night. I won't be able to make it in today" Don't ever tell them your interviewing or you'll be the next one let go, guaranteed.

QFT. Keep it short and sweet, just say you are sick and won't be able to make it in.

I thought it was a bad idea but I'm also wondering if giving a heads up beforehand would save me some trouble... I guess not haha.

lol, because a corporation is ethical and loyal to its employees? I'm sure they take into consideration your bills, family situation, how much you love your job, etc. before they tell you you have 10 minutes of supervised time to clean out your desk.

If this is for a state job, what ever you don't cancel. If Texas is anything like California it could prevent you from getting a job in this classification in the future.

dont worry about dicking over your employer - but try not to dick over your coworkers

what happened to your personal days?

In almost any company though sick days are only for being sick. They are also not designed to be fully used by all employees.

We used to have a 6 sick occurance policy here, each sick occurance could be up to 5 business days (after which you'd be eligible for short term and then long term disability).

Sure enough the same high percentage of employees had 30 days off each year.
