long story short, on june 21 someone from a different department requested to interview me for an opening on his team (no idea how he found out who I was). the position would be a big promotion (I have like 1/4th the experience of people normally in that role). he told me about the job, asked about me, etc. The interview went good/ok, not as smooth as I had hoped but he did seem to really like me. The person I would be replacing is moving to our Ireland office on October 1, but he wanted someone to shadow her for a fiscal quarter (Q3 starts Aug 1).

the following Monday (a week ago) I emailed him to thank him for his time and express again my interest. I haven't heard anything since. I saw him in passing last week and we exchanged "oh hey how are you?"s and then I saw him on the elevator today but I was mid-conversation with another coworker so I just gave another short "hey how are you?" and smiled.

do you think, if I didn't get the spot, HR or the guy would let me know? or would they probably only tell me if I did get it? this is my first corporate job, so don't know what's the standard procedure. thanks.

They should tell you either way and if they don't, they suck.

I got an interview request sprung on me today (for an interview tomorrow) for a promotion. I think I am the sacrificial lamb; I think they already have someone they want to give it to and my interest allows them to interview another person to "look good." The funny thing is that I'm more qualified than this person and in the last interview for a higher position, he washed out in the first round while I made it to the final round (and lost). It will be interesting to see how they'll explain giving it to him given everything above.

There might be a window during which they're not allowed to say anything.

That said, I figure you get to ask where you stand one (1) time. Once. And you need an excuse. (Flimsy though it may be.)

After that, it's nagging.

Don't seem desperate. If it happens, it happens.

I've always got results out of leaving a voice mail to the extent of, "I have a feeling you're going in a different direction. If so, that's fine, just let me know."

I've always gotten a call back if I'm still in the running (as judged by either a subsequent interview or job offer).

Grow some balls and ask HR when they expect a decision to be made?

I went through a similar situation at my last job. There was an opening at a different branch that I was interested in so I applied. It took about a month and a half or so before I finally heard back. Turns out I got the job but later I found out my current manager was fighting to keep me where I was because he didn't want to lose me.
Maybe your current manager is fighting to keep you? Inter office politics can be hard to figure out. I say give it a few more weeks then start asking.

Yea, my current manager and director definitely do not want to lose me. They absolutely love me and already had planned to promote me to manager and move my current manager to a new department that's being created in a month or so. I don't know how hard they'd actually be fighting to keep me but they definitely aren't encouraging my leave. Also, last week was the busiest of the year so maybe they told HR to wait a bit? Fingers crossed

Any GOOD manager will want to see you progress even if that means losing you.

I was promoted under the same manager that later let me go

I would've asked him about it 2nd time I seen him (assuming a week went by).

But if he was professional he would've AT LEAST gave you an update within few days.

Also it could be that this person is playing games with YOUR manager OR your manager is setting you up to see if you would book. Neither is good or healthy OR professional.

This.

OP, if your manager is truly holding you back and you can confirm it, you need to have a talk with HR or demand that he make up the salary difference between your position and the other one.

At my last company, HR got shitty with my boss and accused him of holding me back. I don't believe that was the case because there just weren't any opportunities internally for me to apply for and I wasn't willing to relocate to most of the other larger US locations.

EDIT: Just saw this:

In that case OP, get it in writing, along with your new salary.

IIRC, he's been working less than a year and is right out of school...
