Interviewing while employed

I was wondering how people did this. Since most interview offers I've come across happen in ~1 week of the actual call how did you get out of work to hit up the interview?

Did you let your current employer know that you're doing interviews and that they should be expecting interruptions in your work schedule in the coming weeks/months?

I know a lot of places would require a decent heads up notice for using your time off unless you're calling out sick. This makes it hard to ask for time off in a timely manner when you have to go to interviews. At least that's my experience.

How does one go about this?

I check "do not contact my current employer", and then I go to random "doctors appointments" or other miscellaneous tasks.

And if it's out of town make up a reason why you need to take a vacation day on short notice, like a good friend having an emergency. Personally, I'd make sure it is marked down as a vacation day rather than paid time off or a sick day (if your current job does it) but that's up to you. I just like to make sure that no one can get grouchy and say that I was job hunting when I was on the clock.

a lot of places i've interviewed understood the difficulty of leaving in the middle of the work day for an interview and would schedule interviews either early morning or after business hours. when that wasn't feasible i would make up an excuse to have to step out of the office.

This, for the most part, is not a good idea.

That's a good point. If they request to contact current employer and you say no are you more or less screwed?

Vacation. Taking a sick day for it is a dick move. How would it look if the interviewer asked how you got the time off?

Sick day is par for the course.

And no don't tell your current employer that you're interviewing! Unless you want a lot of time available to interview

Yes - some places will make today your last day the instant they catch a hint that you're looking elsewhere, complete with an immediate escort out of the building.

If you have 1 week's notice, it's not difficult to ask for a day off (I did this while at my previous job and no one asked any questions because I had over 3 weeks of PTO). You shouldn't be asked why but just give some excuse (doctor's/dentist appointment at 11:30/1:30, you have to pick up your relatives at the airport and they decided to make their flight arrive at 12:00, etc.)

However it's very ymmv.

I've always taken a sick day. I never broadcast my intentions at work. There is no good that can come of it

Well, if you are employed, you will only be applying to jobs that you want and are a good fit for. You do not have time to apply to jobs that you are doubtful you will get or jobs that you are not 100% sure you want to invest your time too.

Screwed as in not getting the job? No, it is perfectly normal for you to keep your job search confidential if you are currently employed. In fact it is odd to me if you let me contact your current employer while you are looking.

"f*cking" sound the most appropriate. Only one that rythmes and fits, really.

What did he have to say when you told him the great news?

it was a really small business so it was a bit "informal"

I was just past a 3 month probation and decided to tell them it wasn't the job for me. They don't know where I went.

As a manager and as an employee, I strongly recommend not broadcasting that you are interviewing elsewhere.

Even if you are

No doubt about that.

Where I work, they grudgingly took up the policy of, at least for layoffs, having you leave the building right after being notified that you're now unemployed.
I'm told that at some point in the past, someone was notified that they were part of a round of layoffs, so this person decided to wipe out a bunch of files before leaving.
