I am really into programming and what not, but ever since i been taking one of the two CSE classes at Univ. of Washington i been really stressed out in the class, but when i finish something i get all jazzed about the major and happy about my choice... it is just the other times.

For a career i do not want to be stressed out all the time, so i am asking for suggestions.

I like the whole concept of CS stuff, but do not know if i am as good as i hoped i would.(in programming) (and i hate math )

In this case, what would be some majors to look into? (keeping in mind that i am very much into computers)

Nothing seems likeable, untill i look into CSE. There are no other types of class i would actually enjoy.

Thanks
Please comments?

I was in it for a while, thought it was boring and switched to art. Didn't finish, now I'm going into the Air Force. Just don't start drinking.

Bite the bullet. Technical majors == stress and work. If you love it, it shouldn't be a problem.

If you want to breeze through college, they're always looking for business majors...

CS would require lots of programming....and you programming classes would probably make you pull your hair out if you are not good at programming. However, if you are able to finish your programs and understand how they work, and dont mind spending the time to work on and think about your programs, then it should be fine.

however, just to get a CS degree would require lots of math classes. If you absolutely do not want to take Calculus 1, 2, 3, 4, diffeq, linear algebra, and discrete math, then you would really need to change majors.

if you want something less intensive, then probably a MIS degree.

I am a CS major right now, going to be a senior in the fall. Its ALOT of programming and work. At my school I have completed the math requirement of pre-calc,calc I,II and foundmentals of computation. I am also a stat minor so I am definitly doing even more programing with my statistical programs. Its not for everyone, but I am going to finish it out because I am way too far in to quit now. Back to programming in MIPS

i think my CS major was a big mistake. the programming was stupid (imo) and the theory classes SUCKED. did it help me find a job? no. i don't even work in any CS-related field.

Maybe sit in a programming related EE class and see if there is any interest? Do you enjoy math? That's a easy major coming from an engineering major.

Yea you made a point Semidevil, i do get them done, and i do understand them.

Also funny thing is - my backup was Business haha! - i do want to minor in it though, CS and Business looks good.

Math wise, i can live with it, if i can get done with these classes then i will be home free, so it will be a nice day when that happens!

I think i will bite the bullet and go this way in life, it may be hard - but it has to be at some points right?

Thanks, a lot this helped me a lot.

Yep. Be prepared for a lot of math. I'm not too hot about doing all the Math - Calculuses, Linear Algebra (3D graphics uses this A LOT) etc but I'm doing good with programming..

Discrete Math is a bitch if you don't have a good instructor.. it's not teh traditional kind of math like you did in high school though.

MIS might be fun and definitely won't be as hard as CS

The reason i second guess myself was because i got the mid term back today, and didnt do to well.

The stupid thing is, i now know i have some type of dyslexia (people have told me before that they think i have it, but i always denied it).

and i should have looked into having more time on the midterm (only 50 minutes, hard test)

i guess i will have to get diagnosed soon.

I mean, it will be hard...but if you are motivated to do it....then dont stop....and please find that out as soon as possible before you go too far....i know I did.....

i'm just about to graduate with my cs degree. i'm definately not a hacker, but I can figure out the programs and get em done for the most part. the math part was decent, I survived. But getting an internship and experience and doing well in that will get you the job just as much as the major, and I'm good at pulling off the whole people skills and working on a project thing.

I always said i wanted this, and i would need that much math for really anything with engineering anyways

You're about to graduate and you still think CS is about being a hacker

You can do CS, its tough but with experience and aptitude + work you will get through it.

Actually working in the industry should be less stressful because you know whats going on by that point, whereas you don't now.

Not hacker as in "computer hacking skills," hacker as in someone who can sit down and code some crazy program in 20 minutes.

Wow, that sounds very familiar. I was a CS major at UGA and got so bored with it I started drinking & doing drugs everyday & quit studying. I dropprd out my junior year with 100 credit hours & haven't gone back.

My suggestiong is to find a new major & do it quick. Try an Business IT major or something where you could just be a network admin or something. Honestly though, the computer fields are so saturated because every kid since the 80's has been told to take computer courses.

It's really your call, but if I had it all to do over again I would have persued a philosophy, history, or similar degree & worked towards becoming a high school football coach. I would have enjoyed that alot.

that's true. I remember when people told me that i'm pretty good at hacking and i thought "wtf?" I was thinking breakig into someone's network, but what they meant was just finding ways around a code.

Wow...you might be in my class scary...

Is this CSE 142 with Reges or Borning?

BTW CSE 143 is exponentially harder than 142 from what I've heard from my friends...
