Obviously piracy is a problem the only question is how do we keep this from continuing? Should a NATO force be sent to Somalia to remove the pirates from their spawn point?

I personally don't think invading Somalia is the answer but I do feel that better security aboard ocean going vessels in that sector to be a more viable option. Thoughts?

Ever see the movie Black Hawk Down? If we were like the Nazi's or the Soviets it might not be so bad for us but since we go out of our way to avoid civilians casualties it's not a doable scenario

Yeah I have. I agree that invading wouldn't have the best of results but I also think that if this continues a world wide outcry will usher in NATO action. Maybe invasion or just oceanic patrols. IDK, I like the latter rather than the former.

Helping Somalia get out of the poverty that drives piracy: would you agree to that?

Funny how the only option on the table for problems is invading.

It's hard to do much to a country that has been considered a failed state.

Sometimes, Red, you impress me a great deal, this is one of those times.

It's basically local groups who live and feed with civilians, you got this right, it would be a bloodbath, much like Tchad.

No need for invasion, just slaughter the pirates in international waters and let Somalia destroy itself.

Considering most non-military intervention would probably just be intercepted or ignored by the various disputing warlords, I don't see how it would do much good to spend many resources trying.

That being said, I definitely wouldn't support putting troops there (again). It would require a long, costly, and determined effort to fix that country.

QFT... Not to mention the silly question of who's military we'd use. Remember, ours is tied up with more to do than those who sent them ever imagined.

Pretty much the solution to the problem, but it takes a LOT of ships to protect those waters, my solution is better, let the airforce handle it.

Agreed, it would be nearly impossible to conduct a "civilized" war there.

It would take more effort than sending them a check.

At this point no. Just send a carrier group to the waters there and blow the shit out of any pirates in international waters.

And then what? We can't keep our forces there forever. Unless we invest in a significant reconstruction effort, which I doubt we have the money to do so, once we leave, I don't see any reason why they just wouldn't return to piracy.

No, send a couple of jets equipped with any of the air to water missiles and simply blow them out of the water.

Either that or use drop bombs from choppers, no need to risk them going from international waters to another nations waters, that could, would and has led to problems before.

Could keep one ship out there with jets ready for lift off at all times and this problem would be solved.

Make those jets AH Harriers (not AV-8 Harriers) and you don't even need that big of a ship.

Nah. Too much work for not enough gain. So yea, they've hijacked some ships, taken some hostages but does that warrant throwing away thousands of lives and billions of dollars?

Please note I'm not belittling the suffering of those unfortunate crewmembers who've been captured or killed by these barbarians, or those of their families, but in the big scheme of things these pirates are small fry. We can't solve every injustice in the world with armed invasion... There wouldn't be a free country left on the face of the planet if we did!

Better to put a few men armed with heavy machineguns, RPGs or whatever on each merchant ship passing through the region and blow any pirates right out of the water as they approach. Soon there would not be any pirates left - they'd all be at the bottom of the ocean or decided it would be more profitable doing something else.

The only reason the pirates can capture ships in the first place is the crews are unarmed. Change that and you change the odds, drastically. Tiny little craft in the middle of the ocean vs. giant armed metal monster = bad odds.

No military action will stop Somali pirates. The only way to prevent this kind of theft and violence is to provide alternatives for Somalians. No matter how many pirates we kill, there will always be some who are desperate enough to try to hijack ships.

If pirating is a problem, and I believe it is, we need to fix the nation of Somalia, not just kill a few criminals.

You f*cking liberals with this garbage.

We have our OWN economic issues. We are printing money out of thin air just to stay afloat. We cant afford to help anyone else.

Africa always has been and always will be a third-world shithole.

We were trying to send aid there, and some drugged-out pirates decided they were going to steal it.

Hopefully every future pirate meets the same end that these last 3 did. (Well, and the ones the French killed this week as well)

Fuck no. Put a couple destroyers off their cost, blow any pirates up, and that's the end of it.

Really? And we don't really need the police to catch burglers and thiefs either with your wonderful solution, we just have to fix the problem that makes them criminals...

This can't be resolved with handholding or a force inside Somalia, there are too many fractions, too many warlords and no proper government so on which side should we even fight? Riddle me that.

Sure, tough tits, but it's the way it is and the priority is to get rid of piracy in the area, you have the mission, find the simplest way to do it, i've already given my solution.

I say we camp the Quad damage before rushing the spawn point.
