Invalid file copies during setup?

I'm trying to install XP pro on a new computer. During the installation when it is copying the files to the hard drive, several of the last files to be copied seem to 'copy incorrectly'. I press enter to retry and it never says anything more until another file 'copies incorrectly'. Retry always works, but later during the install I get 'page faults in a nonpaged area'. Is this the result of the bogus files or a bad XP cd, or bad memory?

Yes.

Meaning, it could be any of those. I've also seen symptoms like that from IRQ conflicts. Sounds like memory would be my first guess, though. Try using a single stick if you've got more than one, or a known good stick if it's available.

thanks for the reply. I'm running scandisk now just to make sure its not a bad cluster on the disk or something. Next I'll try the install with 1 stick (I have 2x 512mb). My board is an Epox 8RDA+, anyone heard of any issues with the dual channel RAM? I have dimm 1 & 2 filled. Thanks in advance for help.

I had the same problem on another computer a while ago. My problem turned out to be hard drive errors. Scandisk could not fix for some reason.

I ended up reformatting the drive. Then run from DOS a program that can check the hard drives for errors. It found an error in FAT32 and marked it as a bad area. Trying to install XP again worked all the way through without incident. I know that is a bit on the rare side but is one thing to be checked thoroughly.

The hard drive is brand new (WD 40gig) as is everything else. Scandisk did not turn up anything on the drive, so I've removed 1 stick of RAM to see if it really is a memory problem (crucial DDR333). I guess I'll find out soon. Any more suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Based on my experience with bad memory,
I would put my money on it being a bad memory stick.....
Either way....GOOD lUCK
