Goats LOVE all varieties of maple trees. I just fenced in a couple of acres for the goats. There were dozen, if not hundreds of small trees up to 3 or 4 feet tall. The goats ate those first, long before they touched any grass (and wild grape vines - both are like candy for the goats.) If your yard is fenced in, get a goat for 2 or 3 weeks. It'll turn those weeds into fertilizer for the grass.

I used to have the same problem with sumac trees. I cut down 10 or 15 of them, and before I knew it, I had hundreds of them. I'd pull the new ones out by the roots. For every one I pulled out, 3 would grow back in its place. After a couple years, I added goats to that area. A couple weeks later, zero sign of the sumacs even trying to pop their little stems out of the soil.

I'd love to have some goats around. but I don;t know what the city would say though. Imagine if a rent-a-goat service was available for my purpose?

My mom has something in her yard that is similar. Except it grows up with a red stem and has small hairlike thorns all over it. It's not a huge grower though, so if we just mow over them we're good, but if we don't mow for a month they can get pretty large.

She has a few that have grown out (which are probably the main source) and one happens to be in a neighbhors yard, which I've asked them if they would let me dig up to prevent the spread/annoyance which they said no... But it only gets to be about 10feet tall and gets to be about 4 inches thick in diameter at the most, but it curves and turns, almost viney...

To this day I have no idea what it is.

We had the same problem, except it was with a Japanese Mimosa tree. The shoots kept popping up from the original tree's roots for 2 years. We mowed the shoots down and used a weedkiller (but not Roundup--Roundup kills your grass too.)

The problem occurs because there's no way to remove all the roots when you cut down the tree--You'd have to tear up the whole yard!
I think the proper way to remove these trees is to first kill the tree (and the roots die), and then remove it.

Damned invasive species.
My mom loves those things. I hate the freaking droppings.

Update posted in OP:

After rooting the entire front yard:

The entire front yard is scarred up and there are root marks everywhere. Enough roots and underground material was dug up to fill up 6 large lawn bags. Unfortunately, the lawn looks like crap now but it will heal in time. We are still plucking up new shoots everyday, on average 10-20 daily. As long as we stay on top of the new shoots, when they are small, they are quite easy to pluck and hopefully this way we can drain the remaining energy out of the remaining roots and the entire system will die. We spend about 30 minutes every 1-2 days to weed this portion of the lawn.

All I can say from experience is good luck. Don't think they will die without some sort of plant poison but you may get lucky.

Yard doesn't look that bad from photos. Much better than the mess you had there a few days ago.

That's weird the links in the OP work.

NetWareHead, if you go over the worst areas with a core aerator in the fall, then throw down seed, and then cover with a layer of peat moss, and keep well watered I think that lawn will recover quickly. Core aerators do a great job of loosening the soil up for seed without killing the grass you already have. Don't worry about the plugs the core aerator puts on your lawn they'll dissolve back into the soil.

Thanks for the tips. They have those machines for rent at Lowes the last time I was there.

Your torn up lawn looks better than some of your neighbors

Re-sodding is not that expensive. The hardest part is digging up all the old grass and leveling everything out....

UPDATE

After last year's back-breaking work to remove roots, I feared the approaching Spring season and warmer temperatures. I wondered if the tree would make a re-appearance. I've been keeping a sharp eye on the former stump area as well as the entire front yard where the shoots were spotted. So far so good....no more "cancer tree". I really hope I'm not speaking too soon. If I come home and see this thing sprouting again, I'm going to scream.

DAMN IT! The god damned thing is back. Saw some shoots sprout in the lawn as we were getting ready to mow the lawn. With all of the roots we dug out last year, I almost have wood to burn for 1 week straight. Damn tree was so entrenched and sprouting from everywhere. This weekend, I plucked out 5 new shoots, 1 of them connected to a huge root that I must have missed. I dug out like 6 feet of it before I was forced to chop the rest of it that headed further underground.

On a happier note, since it has taken this long, mid-may, for the thing to make its first appearance, I figure there was minimal stored energy in the root system for it to have sprouted at the same time as the other trees, hence the delayed sprouting. Hope I'm correct and this thing is on its way out.

This tree is a rare genetic freak worth billions to the paper industry and for bio fuel harvesting.

I had a Sweet Gum tree do this at my lake house years ago. The tree was huge and damaged in a storm. I cut the tree down but left the stump and roots. All along a large root trunk mini trees started to pop up. I now have a whole row of these trees along the front edge of the property a the road. Not the greatest tree in the world but I like the shade it provides up there and the look so I leave them be.

I've got problem with locust trees. The town planted a pair of shade masters near by, male and female, too close together. My yard is full of them and they're virtually indestructible. Only way to kill them is to up root them before they get too big.
