When the markets open on Monday, invest in the market. Even if it's a nominal ammount. Let us show the rest of the world that America will recover from this.

Buy stock, any stock... just buy good companies...

Buy some Spyders, Diamonds, and Qubes...

i've posted this before and i will post again.

BELIEVE in America.

Investing in stock market is good, but remember the stock market is not the American Economy. We are the economy. the 50,000,000 Middle Class earners are the heart of the US economy. What we do, what we believe determines what happens to this economy. do you think recessions are caused by greenspan? the president? the government? fortune 500 companies?? NO WAY, recessions and Periods of RAPID GROWTH are caused by the US Consumer and what they believe about the future of AMERICA.

well i say, Let's show the WORLD what we believe about America.

My mom was planning to do so, as was her friends...

I spent an hour yesterday explaining to them why they cannot do this...

Sigh...

I hope I got through to them...

Even from a purely economical standpoint I think its bad to liquidate tomorrow. The market may crash for a short while but there will not be a depression. If anything this will spur the economy. Conflict does that. The chances are really that your mother and her friends will drop their assets at a severely weakened price and then in a couple of weeks they'll be worth at least as much as they were and your mother and friends will be out some $$$.

European markets yesterday handled this very well considering. The market is not going to go to sh*t. And if it does its because of people who are fearfully selling.

The stock market responds very well to self-fulfilling prophecy. Tell her not to give in.

If I had $1k sitting around I'd put in a buy order for some stock personally.

Anyway the toronto stock exchange has shot up 55 points already today.

I know a tragedy has just occured and this is an emotional time, but I wouldn't recommend mixing finances with emotions

Anyways, small fry retail investors don't move markets anyways, it's the funds and banks that do. And patriotism or not, it is their JOB and duty to protect the assets of their clients. Foreign markets have already experienced sizable drops, and foreign investors will no doubt be liquidating their US equities.

All signs were pointing to a recession even before this happened, this will just make things worse. Remember, the market had already been pricing in a recovery for next year, and if that doesn't happen we are going to see further tankage. We can only pray that we don't enter a recession.
Consumer confidence already tanked before the incident: link

this is lower than even when the markets were at their lows in April. Just imagine what they'll be after the horrific incident.

that's my point. who determines consumer confidence?? don't be foolish, where our economy goes is not strictly tied in to the stock market. it's very important that we believe in the US and act alike we believe in it. that's the only thing that will get us out of a recession.

As bizarre as this sounds, about the most patriotic thing most of us can do right now is to go out and spend some money.

Maybe it is a good thing that the equity markets won't be open until perhaps Monday. People are becoming a little more rational as the emotional impulse to do something hasty is starting to wane.

agreed platinumgold we must continue to have faith in our country and economy

my point though, is that it is no use to throw away money in the markets to somehow prop them up due to emotion. The markets will move as they will.
There are always business cycles, economies never move in the same direction forever. So a downturn will happen, but then eventually we will resume growth again.

i agree w/ you on stock market, but i really don't care about it. i don't think it is a good forecaster of the economy as a whole.

we should focus on rebuilding america and not worry about the stock market. as you implied, the market will take care of itself.

Wouldn't throwing some money into the market or even going out and buying a $300 item that you were putting off help jump start us though? And it's likey we will be going to war. Being at war is one of the best ways to get a slumping economy going.

I'm no economic expert, I just thought it was a good idea to pump some cash into the market.

actually i am an economist (if having a masters degree in Econ qualifies me). but to your question, spending money on consumer goods would be better than spending on stock market. preferably american made goods. i know in our society that becomes harder but every penny helps.

it's obviously a lot more than that, but like christmas spending, retailers really count on christmas spending to get to profitability. so make sure everyone you know does their normal christmas spending, it's about our confidence in ourselves, our jobs and our country.

christmas spending is probably a lot more important than anything any of us can do for stock market.
