Randypj -- I suggest you open an MSDW online account through a financial advisor at MSDW only because the current promotion is $100 in your account when you open it. How do i know? I work at MSDW I'm not sure if you still get the $75 from ragingbull though, i can check.

JohnGalt - I'm sure I don't sound any worse than someone who jumps into a thread and posts "here's a sure winner". You can find that type of post all day long at ragingbull and how many of those are really sure bets. Maybe you could post some of your research so that we would all be enlightened. That is what this thread is all about - learning from each other!

Another off the wall question...
Could one buy a decent amount of shares at a company's IPO and sell it the next day if it shoots though the roof, or is there some kind of holding period?

For us investing newbies http://www.investors.com/. Follow the links. The FAQ links gives some basics. Downside is that the advice is sometimes keyed to using the printed material.

Just someone elses $0.02.

Kitros, I think you and I both could benefit from this site

About the IPO thing, I'm guessing (cause i never bought an ipo) you could find all sorts of rules for ipo purchases. I remember seeing an article about some ipo shares that had to be held for 6 months or a year (can't remember) before being sold. IPO's can be risky and difficult to get in on. I think mostly institutional money managers get first shot. You can read about 'em here http://www.ipo.com.
We need to hear from someone with more (some) ipo experience. Makanani, what do you think/know?

Side note: Randypj, did you know that you became a member before Red Dawn? How did you manage that??

No stock is a "sure" winner, but AMD has come pretty close. They've done nothing but good since I first started investing last year in April. The stock has sort of struggled past couple months, but they're back around 90 now and I have a good feeling next Wednesday will be their next big rise.

Some interesting stocks to watch:
ATYT- They are very low right now, but their new graphics card is coming out in the next few months which is supposed to blow away anything out right now. They're expecting bad earnings, but I have a feeling about this stock. BTW I don't own any of this stock, I invest in the REAL champion, nVidia, hehe.

COMS+PALM- Buy one share of 3com, get almost one and a half shares of palm free. Can someone tell me why this would make PALM go up also?

Kitros: I'm not positive, so don't take my word as the truth, but I believe that if you buy a share as a member of the public after the company has just IPO'd, then you can sell whenever you want. If you got in before the IPO, then I believe there is a waiting period, then you have to apply to the SEC so that you can sell your shares within a certain time period.

Again, I'm not positive of that, you'll have to check up a reliable source to be sure.

Remember, all corporations have shares... the IPO is just the initial public offering. Once the offering is made PUBLIC, I don't see how they can restrict your purchasing and selling of shares to a certain time period (unless you somehow wanted to purchase 30% of a company from its available public float, however, I doubt many people here are going to do that).

However, again, check up on a reliable source (broker, regulations guide) before making any decisions.

Kitros, you've been receiving fairly "reliable" advice all along (as far as message boards go ). But sometimes reliable investment info takes work to ferret out. Check the link I just posted and go back an read some of the previous threads, there are many excellent links there. To save you some time start at http://www.fool.com.

JohnGalt = troll = IGNORE

Makanani--thanks for the info.

mariner--Heck, I was here 'fore Red Dawn was even on the net. I mostly hung around another board though....oh, and he makes quality posts and has no life. Actually, I think he was doing some major studying during that time.

Well Randy, we may be eating crow. The AMD EPS was released today and guess what, JohnGalt was not far off, relative to others in the contest. His estimate of $1.77 was high but ranked him 48th in the EPS contest here http://www.epscontest.com/winners_lists.pl?cs=AMD&cat=eps&file=eps_cgroups_by_rank_html.dat. He is obviously following the stock closely. YOU called it "Paul". Now come back and tell us how you did it!

The Motley fool message board members posted the best "team average" estimate. Looks like the majority of estimates were significantly high.

And, Randy, your call on qcom looks really good, at least until today

mariner--I never said he was wrong at all. But, poppin' in with a brief rag is just troll-ish.

You have any $$'s sitting that you're looking to find a bargain with? I'm starting to "consider".

I'm also in that mode of considering. But I fear that my consideration phase will be much longer than yours. I will be very busy for a few days and won't have any time until late next week. If anything catches my eye I'll post.

My #1 tech recommendation right now would be TER (Teradyne). Most other interesting stocks with similar potential are vastly overvalued.

RMTR (Ramtron) is another, but a pure speculation play for now. But their FRAM may be a big winner.

I like EXDS too, but they fit the overvalued scenario right now too ...

INTC should be a core holding for tech lovers too. They are transitioning away from a dependence on CPUs to get in to the very lucrative telecom-related semiconductor business, and have several products that will hit the markets soon.

Anyone know anything about a private company called Corvis? They developed a high speed technology for fiberoptics, I believe (but don't hold me to that ) Just wondering if there was an IPO in their future.

both AMD and NVDA were stocks I was eyeing about one year ago
they were both around 20 then, IIRC

I was thinking bacj then "if only i had the money"

To me they were sure things..amd w/ the athlon and nvda with geforce, geforce 2, xbox, and coming off the success of tnt2

Now looking back I wish I could have taken out a loan and bought some =D

I mean..they both went upupup and nvda split recently, and amd announced a planned stock split..

ARRRRRRG... =)

FYI: Corvis Corporation - develops single-layer, transparent, all-optical, high capacity networks necessary for Internet, video, voice, and other data traffic.
