Do you think I should put $1k in to AMD now? Is there a good site that had buy ratings for companies?

Hearing most of the good news from AMD as of late, it seems like they are bound to turn over some decent profit soon.

Is that going to be all the money you have invested? Maybe you should split it up among two or three companies

my dad has more stock in my name, but I'm not sure what he has invested in at this moment. I believe I've had GM stock for 10+ years.

i like amd as a stock.. i put money into it... i believe its more of a longer term buy though.. they still have a LONG way to go against intel but with the recent intel mistakes and amd's 64 bit processor, i think they'll be growing more. now is also a pretty good time to buy because of oil prices, the election, and economy... nvidia (nvda) was also starting to look pretty good when it dropped all the way down to 10...

about spreading the money around a few stocks.. it will help you reduce market risk, but you'd need to have it diversified (don't just buy something like intel and amd b.c they share a lot of the same risk).. personally, with only a grand, I would just put it in one stock to increase the profit (if you're still young, just remember that you still have a long time to make that money back if you do lose some)

buy the stock, put it in the safe, forget you actually own it.

10 or 20 years later, you will be a happy mofo when you remember you actually own the stocks.

this should be the correct way to invest in stocks.

With $1000, I personally don't think its worth it to buy just stock. Even if you make gains, they aren't gonna be very much and you're gonna end up paying a bit for the brokerage fees, so your gains will be close to nil. It would probably make more financial sense to put that money into a mutual fund or IRA

putting it into an IRA and investing it arent mutually exclusive, he could do both.

Consider purchasing an index fund. Investing money in only one company is generally not a wise thing to do.

i'd have to disagree with this. having very few stocks, even just 1 stock, isnt necessarily a bad thing. when you invest in a company, you're basically saying, there's no better place for my money to be right now. and if he really thinks amd is the best investment he could make, why diversify?

Traditional wisdom is diversify. I like that, however this is 1k. It's isn't a life altering amount of money for someone who has extra to put in the market.

If you gain, great!

If the company goes belly up, then the most you lose is 1k.

Do it.

well, I doubt AMD is going belly up any time soon. I think they will gain market share in the desktop and server department (not so sure about mobile). I will contact my dad and see what he thinks!

the money didn't just magically appear from nowhere, most people who lost it went to you if you are lucky I mean really lucky; which also depends if the broker is willing to share his wealth or not. do whatever you like... but you're the type that must have alot of money to be happy... oh well... have a nice day freaking waste of my time trying to make money scamming others and lose in the end.

If you're going to base any single stock buy upon people on a message board, then the answer is no, don't do it. No offense to anybody here, but none of us have even a fraction as much info on AMD as professional investors. AMD is currently selling exactly what it's worth. If it shoots up, or if it drops off, it's not anything anybody here (or anywhere really) could have predicted; they'd just be guessing lucky.

Robcur You don't understand how the stock market or investing works. Anybody can get screwed doing it, and it sounds like you found a shady investor who pulled the wool over some eyes. Millions of intelligent people have most of their retirement in the stock market. There is nothing wrong with that, and it historically offers good returns on the long haul.

agreed. he probably got jammed by some shady investor like my parents. except for them it was one of the largest investor firm corporations in the world (i wont specify which). there was a lot of risky business going on back in the day. the guy got not only my parents, but a whole bunch of other people as well. they recently filed a large lawsuit (multiple investors) against the corporation, but the agent who they were after was actually fired a long while ago and had lawsuits against him even before this one.

yes, the stock market is risky, we lost $2 million+ on it back in 2000. i feel ya robcur.

I don't buy when the news is good. I sell when news is good. Strong companies whose stock prices are beaten down with temporary bad news is what I look for.
Last stock I bought was Inco (N) at $29 about 3 months ago. I've made about 20% on it since then, and I am going to hold it for a while. I like AMD, and I think they have room to grow, and great technology. But PE is 52, so it's already overvalued, IMO. Even if profits grow, they'll only be catching up to valuations. So there is a good upside in earnings, but think it's already priced into the stock. Also, you cannot assume that Intel will just sit on their behind and keep making strategic errors that they've been making last few years. That's just my opinion.
