Ordered 2 units on Jan 1st.
Received only 1 unit on Jan 29th.
Box has someone else's adress.. blacked out (someone returned it already).
The drive was missing the eject/close button.

Lesson learned: add CompUSA to SH1TLIST.

Received my 12/10/32 on Jan. 29th. No receipt, no invoice or paperwork of any kind. Logged into my account to print a receipt for the $30 rebate and all orders I have placed in the past showed up but none for the Iomega. Looks like I lost my rebate, tried calling support number but that is a joke, waited over a half hour and never did get anyone on the phone. Called before to check the status of my order and was hung up on twice. CompUSA SUCKS. They will never see another order from me. John T.

I have ONE REPORT so far that someone just got their Iomega 12x10x32 from CompUSA -- and it seems that Iomega *MAY* have switched OEM's. The drive is not a Plextor. I had the guy check 3 times to make sure it was 10x RW and not 4x RW. He says it shows made in 2001 -- so the switch must have JUST happened.

He says the LED's in the front are not the same, and that the Burn-p logo is not the same. MAKE SURE you compare your drive with the photos before trying any Plextor-related hacks. RoundSparrow info site on Iomega 12x10x32 Plextor OEM

This has NOW BEEN CONFIRMED. It seems that Sanyo now makes a 12x10x drive, and that Iomega has started to sell this. many of the ones coming in this week from CompUSA on-line are the new Sanyo...

I'm not sure what "further info" you are seeking. It is pretty simple... as we knew all along, Iomega doesn't make their own drives, they purchase them from OEM and slap their own logo on the front.

I did put a new link RoundSparrow Iomega 12x10x32x hack pages to the Sanyo BP1300P information. Sanyo's web site says it is an OEM drive.

They are very easy to tell apart if you look at the front. The Sanyo 12x10x has two LED's on the left, the Plextor has only a single LED in the middle.

This was expected... might even explain why Iomega was dumping these drives with a rebate, they were changing models. Of course, many people would prefer the Plextor over the Sanyo... but I've never heard any complaints about the Sanyo drives.

I think you guys were misunderstanding the whole purpose of the hack...

The Plextor drive is in high demand, when people found out that you could get a $200 (at the time) drive for $99 there was a feeding frenzy. Plextor drives were the HOT TICKET in 2000. They were considered to be the best 12x drive out there.

The main reasons the Iomega hack was devised was to a) prove that it really was a Plextor, b) allow firmware updates that Iomega has opted not to distribute.

=== as for the Sanyo ===
If there is any "new hack" - there may be a possibility that the Sanyo 12x4x can be transformed into a Sanyo 12x10x -- but that is pure speculation. I do not have the drive, so I can't do much to look into this. If someone wants to donate one to me... (joke) The bottom line is that the Sanyo doesn't have the following of the Plextor. Personally, I view them as equal drives... in 3 months no one will care and 16x will be everywhere. $99 for a 12x10x drive is still a great deal. I still get mails almost daily asking where the heck one can be had for $99 or $85 (Best Buy pricematch).

Here's a question: Is the Sanyo drive capable of everything the Plextor is? CloneCD, reading certain types of data from CD's, 32x DAE?

mrVW: Thanks for maintaining roundsparrow.com. It's a great resource!

I don't know about the DAE... it claims to do 32x reading, so there is hope... but like the "Plextor", this took several firmware updates to get DAE to work at that speed (my Iomega/Plextor came with a 20x sticker on the box... updating the firmware got a boost in DAE speed).

About CloneCD: -- actually the Sanyo MAY BE BETTER than the Plextor in this regard! there are issues with the SD2 copy protection. Look on this page under the "CloneCD and SD2 Copy Protection" section -- I do not know, but it is always possible that the Sanyo may be able to do this when the Plextor can not.

At least in this regard, the Plextor is actually NOT the best drive for CloneCD.

Is there a way to tell if my drive, received a few days ago and still unopened, is a Plextor or a Sanyo, before I open the box. Reason being, I may want to send it back if it is not a Plextor.

You probably want to open the box to check to see when it was manufactured and also compare the front of the cdrw.

I also would like to know if there is a way by looking at the box to determine if the drive is a Plextor or the Sanyo; I don't want to pay the 15% open box restocking fee. My box has a white sticker on the bottom with the text "Job Order 40778". Does anybody know what the Job Order is for the Sanyo drives?

My sticker, on the outside of the box, on the back at the bottom, says "Job Order 43070". Did anyone get this job order and can they tell me if the drive inside was a Plexxy or a Sanyo.

My sticker, on the outside of the box, on the back at the bottom, says "Job Order 43070" and it is a Plexstor Drive.

My box has the same job order # but the picture of the drive on the front of the box shows 2 lights on the left corner. Should I be worried or just ignore the picture?

Just use a letter opener or screw driver to carefully open the box along the bottom edge flap (don't cut the tape and open it on the edge flaps).

If you don't damage the box, you could put the drive back in & glue the flap shut & they shouldn't be able to see that the box was opened.

Thanks, Nutzo, for both pieces of information.

carmann, my box also shows what appear to be two indicator lights. I am going to preserve my options while discovering what is inside the box.

The picture on my box showed 2 lights, but it was a Plextor drive inside.
