iOS 10 bricking devices

My iPhone 5S updated fine via WiFi to the GM of 10.0.1 (public beta).

However, before doing the iOS 10 update, I recommend:

1) Update iTunes to the latest version.
2) Backup your iPhone/iPad locally (+/- iCloud backup).
3) Archive the backup, so it can't get erased. (Preferences --> Devices --> right click on most recent backup to archive
4) Download all your photos somewhere safe
5) Update

Apple doesn't mention doing #4, but I think this is necessary, because if your phone really gets totally bricked or needs a wipe, you've lost your photos as well.

And that is why I always backup and use iTunes to update... at least 1 week after the update arrives so everyone else can iron out the issues.

I had to connect to iTunes to save my iPhone 6s. After I installed over the air, it rebooted into with the "connect to iTunes" screen. Luckily, nothing was lost. And thank god I have an old piece of junk Mac in the house otherwise I'd have been forced to install crap iTunes and pollute a PC with that garbage. *phew!*

I did OTA on my 6s+ just fine. Was at 9.3.2 before I think. Huge performance increase

Same here. I upgraded my 6s+ and iPad mini 2. I haven't played with the iPad much, but my phone feels like it got the A10 upgrade. Much snappier and web pages load quicker as well. I wasn't expecting a performance increase, but it's there, or at least it feels like it's there.

According to Ars' measurements, stuff like app loading, etc. has actually gotten a bit slower, but not hugely slower.

However, it seems to me that there may have been some changes in the animations or transitions or whatever to make things feel faster.

Safari is faster though, as expected.

Don't know why people continue to get bit by this when it seems to happen every major update. Wait a few weeks for all the weird bugs and performance issues to get fixed in the .1 patch. I typically wait until that's out before updating my iPad because it use it almost every day and its not worth the hassle of something going wrong.

Just a note:

While there are bugs in 10.0.1, there are no significant performance issues.

iOS 10 works fine on the iPhone 5/5c.

This is in contrast to the experience on older hardware for iOS 7, 8, and 9. All of those felt really slow on old hardware at release.

I wonder if the unusual lack of performance degradation has something to do with the SoC. The iPhone 5 was right around the time Apple started making their own custom core designs instead of using the stock ARM cores (and it may have also been when they did the 64-bit changeover as well, but I forget if that was with the 5 or 5S) so it could be that a lot of what they did with iOS was to optimize for their custom design which tended to make performance much, much worse on the stock ARM cores found in their older phones.

^^^ iPhone 5 has 1 GB RAM, same as iPhone 6.

A5 based devices like iPhone 4S and iPad 2 and the earlier A4 based iPhone 4 have only 512 MB.

BTW, the iPhone 5S and iPhone 6 / 6 Plus effectively got a cut in memory size because of 64-bit (and the larger screen in the 6 and 6 Plus). iPhone 5 is 32-bit.

That is unfortunate. Performance seems improves noticeably, at least on 2GB devices. My devices have not suffered negatively.
