Thanks Elganja and Kazukian, you just made my day. Now with my phone, I can just pick it up and basically graze the home button to get it to unlock (hell yea TouchID 2).

Yeah, this is what I want too. Glad you guys found out about that setting.

fyi... you can get the old home button way back... it is a preference (just found out myself)

Thanks for this... Don't know how they come to these decisions to force people to a new way of doing things. I always find it best to provide an option, like when you set up the new iOS install.

I really wish they'd add an option to disable the camera on the lock screen. It's the worst feature I've ever seen if you have friends that are uncouth enough to mess with your phone.

iPad Air doesn't have Touch ID, that Home button setting isn't there.

I'll upgrade it to 10 when they add back Slide To Unlock, or better yet make the keypad appear immediately when I open the Smart Cover. By then they should have fixed the bugs so I can upgrade my iPhone as well.

I upgraded my work 5 using iTunes and had no problems. Having to hit the home button twice to get the unlock prompt is just something that I will have to get used to.

Ooh, I could see that being annoying. At least Apple had the good sense not to display the existing photos on there without unlocking.

You don't have to do that. It's a setting.

I'm convinced now that Apple has changed the animation speeds of some features like iMessage text entry bubbles. It makes the phone feel faster when it actually isn't and may actually be slower in some stuff.

i feel like it opposite ... i suppose once the animation starts it looks good and smooth, but it appears to take a while for the animation to start

e.g. opening an app, switching to another app, doing just about anything in imessage

I'm on an iphone6 though ... so maybe the hardware is "outdated"

I'm on a 5S, which is even slower than your iPhone 6, but it feels faster to me in some spots when compared to iOS 9. But I already felt lags in iOS 9 so maybe I'm just used to those. Mind you, your iPhone 6 is bigger than the 5S, and some people have noticed that the 6 Plus actually felt slower than the 5S at launch. Not so much with the 6, but nonetheless I think screen size has something to do with it since it takes a bit more compute power and more memory.

I don't know how applicable this gfx bench is, but it does illustrate what I'm talking about:

In this very specific bench, your iPhone 6 basically performs similarly to my 5S, and actually is slightly behind it, whereas the 6 Plus loses badly.

In contrast, I've read a review that says the iPhone 7 Plus is just about perfect in terms of OS feel (if you exclude the bugs). What they meant by that is that with every iPhone release so far in recent years there have been occasional stuttering or lagginess. Most people didn't really notice it, but he did, even with the 6s series. He doesn't with the iPhone 7 series. It's just perfectly fluid.

Overall though, we're just nitpicking.

i think it's a change in ideology on apples part:
  • in the past if an app was slow to load, they would still start the animation right away and it would be jittery at times (the animations)
  • now, they pause for a split second (length depends on load time), so the animation will be very smooth with no jitteryness
as an aside, i noticed this first when going from ios6 to ios8 (skipped 7)... they used the same ideology within apps as I mentioned above, but now they pushed it to loading apps (i.e. external from the app)

I'm guessing the iphone 7/7plus is just so powerful, it makes those loading times significantly smaller

Battery drain has been pretty bad for my 6S, particularly with the google photos app all of a sudden indicating 50+% drain, all background usage. Uninstalled that for now. Also a few random crashes or something, then getting the battery's drained indicator when I try to turn it on. Plug it in, boot up and the percentage is right where I left it (like 30+%).

Probably need to try to do a few full discharges and recalibrate, but I think something in the software is probably screwy.

Yesterday we were trying to debug an issue that someone was only having on iOS 10 vs the iOS 9 device I had.

When we plugged my iOS 9 device in and looked at the console logs (you can do this via Xcode Devices), it was really only spewing out the stuff in the app we were testing out.

Then we plugged in the iOS 10 device, and holy crap, the console was spewing out stuff non stop. Like we couldn't even see our own logs in there because there was so much more gibberish. A lot of it had something to do with "biometrics" because we kept seeing that come by a lot.

Now granted, this was in Xcode 7.3.1 that doesn't include the iOS 10 SDK, but we did the hack to Xcode where you can deploy to iOS 10. So I don't know if it just doesn't know how to read the console properly on an iOS 10 device, or if there is just a lot more stuff going on in the background in iOS 10.

The whole reason I brought this up was because you mentioned battery drain being bad, and we noticed a ton more stuff going on on the iOS 10 device than the iOS 9 device from the long standpoint.

My battery life doesn't seem much different to me after upgrading to iOS 10.

All the lockscreen stuff like messaging etc seems like a big security risk...

When is Apple going to allow selecting anywhere on sliders without dragging? Be that video playback, brightness change, or volumes, etc. Right now whenever there is a spectrum of value you have to start from where you are and drag it all the way. It is error prone and frustrating. Sometimes it requires using both hands when a single hand sould suffice suffice had there been an option to select a spot you want to go to.

Rest finger to open is key. Also I had to disable how moving the phone wakes it up. I found that annoying.

In other iOS 10 news I'm having icloud keychain issues as are others. Oddly my 6s was perfect on iOS but the 7 is messed up. The keychain still works but prompts for the security code every now and then and fails. Even now it says "pending" under my iCloud keychain. Also it broke my access to my exchange mail server. I can't get email.

EDIT: Ok I figured out my email issue. Maximum number of partnerships reached. Annoying but can be fixed easily.

Other annoying things about iOS which will never get fixed.

The automatic capitalization of input into user name/password fields. Just stay the F out of my password entry operations.

The very dumb password manager will not offer to create passwords on many sites. Why not just allow access to a password generator and then offer to save the password? That would be not stupid is the answer i guess.

I've never seen a password field auto-capitalize text.

As for the username field, well that is on the developer. You have options to set the text field to do what you want it to do. At least on apps you do, not sure about websites.

I also have never seen a password field auto-capitalize text.

But the auto-capitalization of user names is very annoying. This happens within browsers.

Right it's just usernames. It should stay the heck out of that stuff unless it remembers both.

And also where it fails to create and/or insert a password it should just have a password generator that I can copy and paste from. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that would be useful.

As for lag. iOS has lag it just very cleverly disguises it with animations. Even if you apply "reduce motion" it still covers the lag with a soft fade in. There's no way to use it without any animations. Unless maybe one jailbreaks it.
