Considering OS X 10.6 came out in the middle of 2009, running OS 10.5.8 isn't the best excuse for being pissed that you can't update. Is this the first issue with updating programs you've encountered with 10.5? I don't think it can run the latest Chrome or Firefox either, among many other things (IIRC). I even keep a couple of purchased copies of 10.6 (got them for like $25 each on sale ages ago) around because of all the compatibility issues with the old version of OS X.
You don't know anyone with a newer Mac who can lend you their copy (before Apple went to digital-only distribution)?
I got my white macbook in 2008. It came with 10.5.8. I didn't feel like upgrading it. I don't think I've ever upgraded an OS on a laptop or pc that I've built. I just stuck what was on it and left it as that.
Upgrading from iOS5 to iOS6 was another issue. I had the same issue but I managed to d/l a separate version of iTunes to install so that my phone with iOS6 would connect to it.
Good point about friends with Macs. I didn't think of that. I wasn't sure you could just install it without any serials or keys etc.
