Considering OS X 10.6 came out in the middle of 2009, running OS 10.5.8 isn't the best excuse for being pissed that you can't update. Is this the first issue with updating programs you've encountered with 10.5? I don't think it can run the latest Chrome or Firefox either, among many other things (IIRC). I even keep a couple of purchased copies of 10.6 (got them for like $25 each on sale ages ago) around because of all the compatibility issues with the old version of OS X.

You don't know anyone with a newer Mac who can lend you their copy (before Apple went to digital-only distribution)?

I got my white macbook in 2008. It came with 10.5.8. I didn't feel like upgrading it. I don't think I've ever upgraded an OS on a laptop or pc that I've built. I just stuck what was on it and left it as that.

Upgrading from iOS5 to iOS6 was another issue. I had the same issue but I managed to d/l a separate version of iTunes to install so that my phone with iOS6 would connect to it.

Good point about friends with Macs. I didn't think of that. I wasn't sure you could just install it without any serials or keys etc.

You don't know what you're missing until you've tried it, but that's why you need to try it right away!

For me I tend to wait for my main machines, often a very long time, just for software compatibility. However, for my secondary machines I update right off the bat.

10.5.8 is really old. I run 10.4 and 10.5 on my PowerPC machines, but only because I have to. 10.5 really benefits from 2 GB RAM. For those with 1.25 GB RAM or less, I recommend 10.4. 10.6 is decent for Intel and is a big step forward, and it is what I run on my MacBook but that's because it won't accept anything later.

I have 10.7 on my iMac, and 10.8 on my MacBook Pro, but honestly I don't find those to be absolutely necessary. 10.6 is my recommended functional minimum for an Intel machine. Lots of software doesn't even support anything before 10.6. As you've discovered, even just iTunes requires 10.6.

Okay one more complaint, absolutely hate the new Calendar. I used to use the Apple Calendar app for quick entry, then the Agenda Calendar app for managing the rest of it. Looks like I'm switching entirely to Agenda!

I have had some strange things happen this weekend. It seems like iOS hung up on Maps after I reached my destination. It wouldn't let me close Maps! I tried going to lock screen, pressing home, double pressing home, triple pressing home and changing to color accessibility mode, but after like 10 seconds or so of it not doing anything, it closed.

At least, it didn't crash!

Yep, you can basically use a legit copy of iOS 10.6/10.7 several times. And 10.6 is sooo much better than 10.5, both under the hood and in the interface. Don't you watch the presentations? Over 300 new features! (or whatever # it was).

Unfortunately your Macbook doesn't have the glass trackpad that they introduced in 2010, because the gestures in combination with 10.7 make using iOS sooo much more pleasurable on Macbooks IMO.

The 2008 and up Macbooks are capable of the same gestures as the glass track pad ones, IIRC.

I had a 2007 top I replaced with a 2008 and all the trackpad option came alive in OS X afterwards.

I found one change that's a nice quality of life change. Normally, when I was typing and I wanted to go back and insert text, it was a little bit of a chore. To allow auto-correction to work properly (or improperly ), I had to insert a space, then reposition the cursor back one as auto-correct compared all the existing text. I was typing in Safari earlier, and I was simply able to reposition the cursor and begin typing. For example, I repositioned, typed "ive" and I got "I've".

Essentially, auto-correct is a bit smarter in regard to what to consider after you reposition the cursor.

double click home, swipe left for "Music" icon is now gone!??!

Actually, the icon simply accessed whatever app was currently playing in the background. For example, if I was listening to a YouTube video, it would show the Jasmine icon.

Also, you can open the control center and click on the song's title to open the Music app.

Breathe, it's now easier. Swipe up to get to control center and your music is right there.

I didn't realize you can click on the title to get to the playlist/artists/songs, which is where the "gap" was.

There's technically an on ramp from De Anza Blvd to 280 there. I'm kind of wondering if the new icon is just random or reflects another point on the map.

I can't find it on the map. It isn't Infinite Loop, so Steve is turning over in his grave. I liked those little touches, such as the icon from the TextEdit app.

Using my iPhone 4 on and off for the past few days.

Currently at 13% battery life. Started at 100% and have not charged since then.

Usage - 10 hours, 25 minutes.
Standby - 5 days, 2 hours.

Been using the phone for texts, music, took a few pictures, took some very short movies, used the flashlight quite often, watched movies that are on my phone, watched Youtube videos, and browsed Safari with my home network.

I had Bluetooth on so it may have been scanning for devices which could have dropped battery life a bit.

I did not change any other settings like background refresh. I left it all default.

I would say it's a little worse than iOS 6 but still much better than my Android device which lasts 1.5 days Standby. Doing a few texts and music drains the battery fast.

Also the performance on iPhone 4 is quite good.

On the iPhone 4, I think the worst lag is when setting selecting an image for use as a background, from the Photos you've taken with the camera. It just sits there for a couple of seconds before loading up the pic. I think what it may be doing is resizing the picture for the background, but more slowly than I was expecting.

Just tried it and your right. Really nothing major though. Maybe 3 seconds of waiting and moving the picture isn't super smooth.

I cannot complain. Good battery life, good responsiveness, does what I need it to do.

I prefer Android, but not the Android phone I have. Not going to shell out money or get a contract just for a new one.

Those of you who got the free iWork, iMovie, and iPhoto, can you install them on your other older existing iDevices via iTunes?

The reason I ask is because iWork supports everything on iOS 5.1 and up, and iMovie + iPhoto support both my iPhone 4 and iPad 2 and up on iOS 6.0. That's $40 worth of iApps that'd be good to get on my other iDevices.

Well it looks like ANY device you activate for the first time under your Apple ID after Sept 1st gets the apps.

I fired up the App Store on one of my iPad 3's that I've had for about a year and a half. I've actually bought most of the iWork apps, but haven't bought iPhoto and Keynote. They show up as $5 and $10, respectively.

I checked out my iPhone 4 and have the same thing.

I had my iPhone 5 replaced by Apple a couple of weeks ago. A day or two after the keynote. On the App Store on that device, the apps show up as free.

So I bought them. They instantly showed up as purchased and downloadable on the other devices. I didn't have to close the App Store out or anything.
iPad 3

iPhone 4

So I think you could even sign in to any random device that was purchased after Sept 1st, purchase the apps, then sign out of the device and give it back to whomever it belongs to and you'd be all set.

Yep, any supported iDevice on or after Sept. 1.

Awesome, that's perfect. Thanks for the info.

The iOS 7 maps icon reflects Apple's new HQ location.

In regard to free software, I was a bit puzzled last night to find out that iTunes and my iPhone both state that I need to pay for Garage Band, but I already own it. It's sitting in my list of apps and is installed on my iPad. Also, I cannot view any of my purchased apps on my phone in the App Store app. Clicking on "Purchased" shows a blank page, and searching brings up no results. :\

That seems like a reach. There is no park in the area, just old HP facilities. The scale of the curve of 280 is also too great, and the straightness of Pruneridge is off, unless the route is supposed to be on Homestead. Still no park, just residential homes. The old icon was fairly accurate, minus the on/off ramps.

Well the old HP facilities are the new Apple campus. I don't think pruneridge that runs through the facilities now is going to be there once Apple finishes. So it will just start at N Tantau, which is straight there.

I don't think it's AS accurate as the previous icon, but I don't think it's a stretch at all for the location.

They couldn't close off Pruneridge, there are condos or apartments on that street near Wolfe, and houses past Tantau. I also think HP is still in the area between Pruneridge and Homestead, although I'm not sure. Pruneridge is a substantial street. bah...I was happier when I didn't know the icon actually represented an actual place on a map.

It's difficult to tell from the leaked proposed picture, but it looks like they actually might just straighten out pruneridge. But I don't know if they'll want common traffic that close to the HQ.

And don't forget that the little apartment complex in the bottom left corner isn't being touched in Apple's plan.
