Did you run 8.0 on it before? 8.0 was really laggy.

I'd love to use SMS relay but don't want to use imessage. Unfortunately, Apple refuses to allow SMS relay without iMessage active.

I also tried Yosemite phone calls but the audio want working correctly. However that was with 8.0.2. Maybe 8.1 fixes this.

She ran iOS 8.0 and 8.0.2, then finally 8.1. It's hard for me to say if it is more or less laggy since I don't use her mini (just update it), but she never complained about performance.

As for calls, Continuity wasn't working very reliably between her, 5s, mini and 5 (no service). But with 8.1, it works perfectly.

Anyone install 8.1 on an iPad 2 or original iPad mini yet? If so, how is the performance vs 8.0.2 and 7.1.2?

What about the iPhone 4S too?

Performance is still lame, safari seems to be a bit worse. Battery life is great now, more like running OS 6. I think the simple fact is that any A5 SoC is going to be just too slow for IOS 8.x.

I'm still on 8.0.2 on my 5s and it seemed to be running fine since it was installed. in the last couple of days though, my phone has been getting really warm and draining battery far too quickly with Pandora running in the background. this has never happened before.

If anyone has a chance, can you try the following?

1. Launch Pandora
2. Let it start playing
3. Pause song and/or go to multitasking and kill Pandora
4. Pandora should stop playing as usual
5. Open control center. Does it still show "Pandora" in the media controls?
6. Click 'play' arrow in Control Center. Does it start playing the song Pandora was playing? (it shouldn't, right? i mean, you killed the task but somehow, it's playing).
7. Go to multitasking. Does Pandora app show? (it doesn't for me, but since it started playing in step 6, shouldn't it show?)

Something with pandora in background is going wonky all of a sudden i think. (background app refresh setting is also swtiched off).

Side by side comparison of iOS 8.1 vs 7.1.2 on iPhone 4S.

Skip to the 50 s mark since the first 50 s are just blank screens for a cold boot.

http://youtu.be/rReBg6llszE

The 8.1 iPhone 4S (left) is noticeably slower. Longer booting and app load times, stuttery scrolling, laggier response. For example there is about a half second delay for auto screen rotation compared to the 7.1.2 iPhone 4S. It's better than 8.0 but still not exactly good.

A friend of mine who has the iPad 3 and iPad mini alongside his iPad Air 2 still considers the iPad 3 and mini borderline unusable in 8.1. That may be overstating it a bit but overall I trust his judgement as he is an iOS developer.

I am sticking with 7.1.2 on the iPad 2. I will reassess when iOS 8.2 comes out, but I'm not optimistic.

I've gotta say iOS8 on my 5s has been a buggy mess. Notification center doesn't sync with my email right, my iMessage keeps deactivating itself when sending from my cell number, I get iMessages delivered days after they were sent sometimes, while others are lost the void and never make it to the recipient. Not to mention bluetooth syncing with cars for dozens of users in my company since they upgraded.

And Apple says we're not allowed to downgrade and stopped signing the iOS7 ips, gotta love it.

Yeah iOS 8 has been pretty bad for me too. All kinds of things that used to be fine don't work properly now. Performance is generally worse. The added features don't really mean much to me. It's a pretty big step back actually.

Do you guys sometimes have issues with a simple copy/paste in iOS 8? Freakin' gets on my nerves when it doesn't properly acknowledge a field to copy or the field to paste. :|

Copy and paste is totally borked for me, when posting messages on AnandTech for example. What happens is that when I select an area that I want to copy, the copy button flashes on and then immediately flashes off, so I can't copy it. What solves it is holding my finger down for a few seconds and then the copy button will stay there so that I can select it.

Also, the cursor positioning sometimes goes all wonky. It will be off by half a character, so I'm not sure where to position it if I want to delete a space or something.

This was a problem in 8.0, and is still a problem in 8.1. 8.1 is still equivalent to a beta as far as I'm concerned.

Mind you, 7.0 was just as bad. 7.1.x was great though.

Exactly my problem. How the fvck do you screw up copy/paste in a closed system?

There is hope!

The description for the beta of iOS 8.1.1 specifically mentions improved performance for the iPad 2 and iPhone 4S.

http://9to5mac.com/2014/11/03/apple-releases-ios-8-1-1-beta-to-developers/

"this release includes bug fixes, increased stability and performance improvements for iPad 2 and iPhone 4s."

I'm looking forward to the reports from the iOS 8.1.1 + A5-iDevice guinea pigs.

So, can we say the ios8 fiasco has been much worse than ios7? ALL of my users who, against my advice, updated to ios 8. Out of the mix of ipad 3, 4 and air and iphone 4s, 5, 5s and one iphone 6, all but the iphone 6 had to be wiped and reset to get rid of all the bugs and glitches. Most of these user are out of state and had to go to local apple stores to make sure their data was restored properly. Ironically my ipad 2, although much slower on ios 8 did not have to be restored but my ipad 4 did. The keyboard and cut and paste was toasted.

Given that some iPhone users lost cellular function with iOS 8.0.1, I'd agree that the iOS 8 rollout was worse than iOS 7's, even though iOS 7's rollout was also very bad. iOS 7's was the worst in iOS history IMO... until iOS 8 arrived.

Thats a nice link, thanks for sharing. For what its worth, 8.1 is a marked improvement over 8.0.x

Do you mean for speed, or just bug fixes? Also, see above. iOS 8.1.1's summary specifically mentions performance improvements for the iPad 2 and iPhone 4S, and presumably this also applies to other A5-endowed iDevices.

It looks like I'll be sticking with iOS 7.1.2 on the iPad 2, possibly permanently.

iOS 8.1.1 shows some inconsistent improvements over 8.1 On the iPhone 4S in terms of lag, but not enough to justify upgrading from iOS 7.1.2 to 8.1.1 IMO.

Practically speaking you can't stick to iOS 7 regardless. You aren't getting any further security updates (and honestly I expect app updates will quickly dry up as well).

Still sucks. After using iOS 8.1 for a while and being happy about the improvement I started having weird errors, one very long lockup and problems with rending in Safari. Now my iPad is just hanging around collecting dust until I hear of a solid fix from Apple. If it's just and iPad 2 or A5 processor problem - they shouldn't have allowed the upgrade - but they did and they blew it.

I updated my iPad mini to 8.0, then 8.1 and have regretted it since. My iPhone 4s remains on 7.1.2 and I plan to leave it there until I have no choice. I with restoring my iPad mini to 7.1.2 would fix it but it didn't. Still copy/paste issue and frequent crashes which never happened on 7.1.2 and only started after upgrading to iOS 8.

Well, as mentioned, 8.1.1 should be slightly faster than 8.1, so there's that at least.

Expect 8.1.1 sometime between today and the end of next week. Apple has stopped signing the 8.1.1 beta, without releasing a second beta.
