Great Little War Game 2
Great Big War Game
World of Goo
Tiny Wings
Tiger Woods PGA Tour (all of them)
Simple Physics
Army of Darkness Defense
Angry Birds (all of them)
Final Fantasy
Fragger
Doodle Jump
Civilization Revolution
Fieldrunners
TapDefense
FIFA 13 (Fifa 14 was a step back IMO due to required internet connectivity and lag)

I mainly like games that you can come back later to continue progress, like sports or tower defense games you can save.
Games that are single play progressive difficulty based get boring (like Tiny Wings or Doodle Jump).

List your favorites at the time, even if you are bored with them now.

I tend to play a lot of puzzle games on my phone. My last big game was Threes, which I still enjoy playing from time to time, but lately, I've gotten back into Kenken. Kenken is the trademarked name for Mathdoku, which is like Sudoku but infused with math. The biggest difference between Kenken and Sudoku is that the prior gets rid of the 3x3 blocks and uses varying outlines that makes the game board look more like Tetris. Essentially, every number put into the blocks highlighted by that outline must match the result when using the specified operator (note: in some higher difficulties, you do not get the operator). You can see an example on the Wikipedia page that I linked earlier. Although, apart from that, it still has the same horizontal and vertical uniqueness rules as Sudoku.

So, now that I got you all hyped up (or bored!) over it, it appears that Capcom's Kenken apps aren't available on the App Store anymore. Although, I did see another one that has a 4+ star rating, and it appears to be newer and universal.

Battleheart (original) is pretty good so far.
Fun little RPG where you have a party of 4 characters and battle monsters for about 3-4min. per round.
You level up and accumulate gear.
Pretty simple and fun.

I avoid the mmorpg type games as most of them suck pretty fast unless you spend real money to advance or just plain keep from being farm-bait.

Cascade is a decent match game

I played that a while ago, and while I liked it at first, my biggest problem came from the controls. I kept having issues selecting the right character, which ended up with some of my party members dying from not being able to heal. I don't know if they've changed it, but it'd be far more effective if you could interact with the character portraits rather than having to tap on the character sprite.

I have the same issue. I try to spread my healer and mage away from my 2 tanks.
Still, it's aggravating when you can't select between your tanks because they are on top of each other.
Even with that problem, its a good simple clean game.
No internet connectivity requirement issues, quick levels, simple fast responsive, fast loading/savings, etc.

I'm still a clash of clans addict. I play a similar one called plunder pirates as well. I enjoy tower defense games but not as much as I used to. There was a series I used to pay $8 a pop for but now everything is freemium and I don't care for that. Just rather pay for a good game and be done with it. (the tower defense games that is)

Can you recommend a couple of tower defense games?

I was going to get Gem Craft but it looks horrendous on the iPad.

I like games that are:

1. Simple
2. Pretty
3. Dark
4. Story-driven
5. Fun

Not a fan of RPG's or sports games myself, but I do like platformers, silly games, and certain puzzler games. Pulling some out from my Games folder:

Super Dangerous Dungeons: Platformer in the vein of Mario. Great controls for touchscreen.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sq1OvV55Y8c

Ridiculous Fishing: Catch as many fish as you can, then shoot them. Really fun.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vzKcJ8QFbMk

Blek: Gesture-based puzzler.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D0YtH4ftRrw

Monument Valley: Escher-style architecture puzzler with a bit of a story.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wC1jHHF_Wjo

Doodle Jump: Accelerometer tilt-based game. Simple but addictive. Great when waiting in line.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VVWVZJXMklo

Rayman Jungle Run: Gorgeous graphics, fun platformer. Simple run & jump gameplay.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9h4rKk6DhDA

Jetpack Joyride: Simple but fun platformer.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jzxi8nid9BQ

Monster Dash: Another simple but fun platformer.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hUQcjPjBWXI

Scribblenauts Remix: Simple but infinite game. Beat the level by writing in whatever you want...tornados, rocket ships, swords, ladders, anything.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HuLJZ6JOTHA

Cut the Rope: Use simple physics to cut the rope to feed the baby monster some candy. Classic & fun game.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pFDS2oFmugs

SuperLaser: Kind of like Galaga or 1942, but with prettier graphics. Very straightforward scrolling shooter.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Ixbut2pJJU

Pako Car Chase Simulator: Isometric car chase game, see how long you can last! Harder than it sounds (not as bad as Flappy Bird, but it's up there).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EkGyYWcyJGE

Two Dots: Like Connect Four on steroids.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uQ9AwBCnZek

Thomas Was Alone: Platformer with a twist - great story & amazing narration.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5K4zjNtQ3y8

Oscura Second Shadow: Dark, moody, atmospheric platformer.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gNuqstmkkvk

Leo's Fortune: Platformer with gorgeous graphics. Absolutely love the visuals. Fun game.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3n0hdulw1zE

Limbo: Another dark, moody, atmospheric platformer. Fantastic artwork, very film noir.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XJih1aOM_ng

World of Goo: Physics-based construction-puzzler.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fvySATGlMV0

Flight Control: Draw lines with your finger to land the planes. Gets harder & more complex as time goes on.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CKYFSZBp4f8

Staying Together: Basically you control two sides of the screen from one side, but each side has different pitfalls. Really fun (and frustrating!) concept.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SY9dNUHeL9w

If I had to pick three to really show off iOS gaming, I'd go with:

1. Leo's Fortune, due to the stunning graphics
2. Momument Valley, because it's a mind trip (also pretty & good lightweight story)
3. Thomas was alone, for the story & narration

Also Limbo, just because I like dark, moody games.

Calculords is my current obsession. If you haven't tried it, give it a shot. It's FTP but there's just some extra cards to buy for $1.99 and they're not necessary to play a lot and even beat the game if you put the time into it. I played for a few hours and then bought the first $1.99 pack which gains you extra cards and removes the ads. I feel it's been worth it, I've probably put in 10 hours so far.

I've been playing Flow Free and Flow Free :Bridges as well. Fairway Solitaire is a classic, as are Tiny Wings, Angry Birds, and Fruit Ninja. Monument Valley is a very beautiful new release that has some nice puzzles.

I've been playing the iOS port of Desktop Dungeons quite a bit recently. I really like that the game supports cross platform saves as I play often on my PC as well.

Boom Beach and Asphalt 8. the first one is like an addicting drug that attracts me to open my phone to check if anyone occupied my land every day. The second is very exciting when you hear the soaring engine and iPhone also gives you smooth and awesome performance to run such kind of game.

Plants vs Zombies is very well implemented in the mobile version. There is a free version for both 1 and 2.
