I’m not a fan of the proposed changes at all. Kids at those ages should be focused on school, sports, etc. learning the “live to work” mindset is bad anyways, but to allow children to work dangerous jobs is not a good idea.

the civil liability protection for employers is just wtf

yeah, the part that says:
The bill exempts businesses from civil liability if a student is sickened, injured or killed due to the company's negligence.
Is just fckn stupid.
BUT...I-Oh-Way is a very red state...so it's not really surprising.

What the fuck is this?

The bill exempts businesses from civil liability if a student is sickened, injured or killed due to the company's negligence. A business also would be free of civil liability if a student is hurt because of the teen's negligence on the job — or is injured traveling to or from work.

I actually started working a prohibited job (hazardous waste) when I was 16, but it was very unique circumstances, everyone else there was over 21. I really don't think it should be the norm, kids shouldn't be risking their digits for a job at 15.

Well you can’t hold the businesses financially responsible when the whole point is to help drive down labor costs by using cheap child labor.

Oh and those requirements to have adequate training better be toothless. Again if business have to spend a bunch on training so some stupid kid doesn’t lose a finger or an eye what’s the point?

Is it, though? In the last 8 elections they've gone for the GOP 3 times.

Finally we can put kids to work washing that dirty coal and businesses don't have to worry about safety.

Clean coal is here!

meh, toothless indeed

A company could face fines of up to $10,000 for violations under the bill, but the state's labor commissioner could reduce or waive the penalty.

I don’t know who is on the labor board, but I’d wager a relatively large sum (like $20 for me lol) that the people on the board are rarely going to enforce this.

it's republicans that don't care if your kids die at work and priests that are the biggest danger to children, certainly not drag queens.

the sick fucking conservatives are always projecting. scum of the earth.

I think that's the filthy libruls in the cities...the farmers have always been conservative. (and don't want to lose their cheap illegal immigrant labor) I suspect thus bill is a reaction to the crackdown on illegal immigration. If they can't git em some "cheap w*tb**ks" to do the hard work...they're gunna use em some kids who don't know enough to complain about wages and safety. If they lose a few limbs along the way...that's the fault of thise dirty libruls for interfering with their labor supply. (ignoring the right's "War on Immigrants.")

My grandparents (and my mom until she became an adult and left) were from Iowa. Grandpa was a Democrat, my grandma a Republican. Their fights over politics were epic...and caused them to divorce before I was born...but divorce didn't stop the political battles. Every year at Thanksgiving and Christmas it would start up again.

It's always about externalizing costs.

Let this be a warning to liberals! This is what happens when you outlaw slavery and the property rights to their children.

Is it, though? In the last 8 elections they've gone for the GOP 3 times.

Yesterday, the news was complaining that iOwa public school enrollment has dropped some 30%. They "reason" that kid are moving to more rural communities. Hells bells, iOwa public schools are losing students because iOwa parents are moving out of the F-ing state altogether. And that too is the reason iOwa is now a red state despite voting for Obama TWICE. All of those Obama voters have fled iOwa as well. Wouldn't YOU?

And then, there is THIS:
Going after the Gays

iOwa Senate subcommittee moves plan forward to restrict LGBTQ concepts in schools

DES MOINES, Iowa —
On Thursday, an Iowa Senate subcommittee moved a bill forward that would restrict LGBTQ topics in schools. The bill is more expansive than the other plans seen so far this session. It would also create harsher penalties for school districts.

This bill would ban school districts from providing any "program, curriculum, material, test, survey, questionnaire, activity, announcement, promotion or instruction of any kind relating to gender identity or sexual orientation." That content would be banned for all Iowa students in kindergarten through eighth grade.

Parents would be allowed to sue the school district, and districts would face civil penalties between $10,000 and $50,000.

Some parents spoke in favor of the changes Thursday, arguing they're needed to protect young kids.

Young children do not have the capacity to understand or process these complex issues," Angie Winell, of Moms for Liberty, said.

Some LGBTQ students shared their own personal stories.

"Transgender is not a bad word. I am not a bad person," one 7-year-old transgender student told lawmakers Thursday. "If kids at school start bullying because of who I am and I need help, how could my teachers help me if it's illegal to talk about it? And if they did, people could sue them. That would make me feel sad and terrible inside."

I ask.... why are republican states like iOwa going after LGBTQ kids????
Because.... THEY CAN.
They would go after black kids, if they could and could get away with it. But since they can't, then LGBTQ kids are their target. But the good news, republican states like iOwa will self destruct. The youth are fleeing, college grads are fleeing, and all iowa has left are the old fart farmers. Case in point, Chuck Grassley. The fartiest old fart of them all.

Clever way to keep a lot of their kids at home in the cheap labor/service sector, ignorant, compliant and near their parent's conservative-tailored influence. Can't have them go off to those socialist infested colleges and get liberalized, yeah?

The more aware their kids are of what's outside of the bubble their conservative parents want to keep them in, the harder it will be to keep cheap labor at home for their businesses to exploit at their leisure.

Actually, I'm not sure why the article bothered to highlight that language, since employers are already not liable if an employee is injured on the job due to negligence. In every state. It's called worker's comp. It is the exclusive remedy for on the job injuries. No civil action is permitted. The only exception is if you are injured on the job due to the negligence of a third party who isn't your employer. Like being a driver for UPS and someone crashes into you on the road.
