I started briefly reading on IP Version 6.0 (128-bit). I was wondering if anyone knows how many possible IP addresses you can get with IP Version 6.0. I know it's something close to an infinite number, but I was just wondering if anyone knew the exact number. Thanx in advance.

Disregard this post. I found the answer after doing some calculations. Thanx.

256^6

Something like 100 ip address for every square foot of surface area on the earth.

and it isnt IP Version 6.0, it's IPv6, or IP version 6, without the .0 at the end.

Ok, thought i would have to disagree with Spider, he's abit lost and is only guessing on the numbers. Sadly he's way off.
Here's the real deal

Number of possible IP's - 340,282,266,920,938,463,463,374,607,431,768,211,465

Number of possible IP's per square meter of earth -
655,570,793,348,866,943,898,599

even then those numbers are off, one must take into account the networking schemes, which are not 100% efficient, eliminate the network and broadcast address, etc etc. It comes to a sizeably smaller number.

that's still not enough ips. like hard drive space, we'll always find enough porn to fill it with.

jhu:

What do you mean not enought address space????

At the moment the entire planet is sharing Class A network or 32bits address space, while IP v6 will let each inch on this planet have more than 70bits for its MAC addresses (equivalent to a bout 396 billions Class A networks per square inch of earth surface).

eg. If you have a house/business per square inch on the earth surface, then each house/business will have over 70bits for addresses at its disposal.

hey, i'm talking cosmic here. pretty soon we'll be off planet. what're those people on the space stations and moonbases going to do? and then those martions, venutions, jovians, etc. and when the aliens come, they're going to be setting up their own porn sites as well.

Err, not quite. Class A space is 2^31, or 31 bits. 2^32 is the entire scope of IPv4.

Surely you guys are mistaken.

Address on IPv6 is 48 bits long (6 octets)

256^6 = 281474976710656 (2.8xE14) combinations
or another way
2^48 = 281474976710656 (2.8xE14) combinations

I'm not guessing at numbers as I have been following V6 since 1996.

PCFREAK - work with these numbers, maybe it was 100 per square foot that I remember.

Wait a second, maybe i'm totally off my rocker. I just checked some RFCs and it says IPv6 address is 128 bits long. I AM WAY OFF. But I could have sworn it was simply 6 bytes.

oh well, time to post in threads where I actually know what I'm talking about.

Looks like I've been out of the loop on v6
