So, my job gave me a 64gb ipad 3 so i could beta test our home grown app on it (im the IT manager). I will admit I am an android fan but I gotta play with this ipad. Our app works great on it.

Anyway, I decided to add some apps like netflix and games and such just to make this thing useful to me. Thats when i notice that the sound output on this thing is horrible! Its really low, especially for streaming stuff like netflix. On my android tabs the sound is too low for me also but they have apps that can boost the sound level like Equalizer (thats the app name) which lets you boost the sound and it can even run as a service and boost all sounds.

Does apple have something similar for its ipad? free or purchase is fine. I just need this thing to actually play sound louder.

I'm not aware of a software solution, but I've never really looked into it. I think that the main problem is that the speaker is side/rear firing rather than more forward firing. Cup your hand around the speaker (i know, i know, super-kludge) and you'll see what I mean.

Any number of places (target, walmart, gas stations) sell passive devices that you put onto the ipad that creates that horn effect.

Headphones fix that problem completely.
Not if you dont want to wear headphones while watching a movie in bed via netflix to fall asleep.

Plus, headphones dont solve the ipads low volume to begin with.

I cant beleive there is not one app available to boost volume. Is this something apple bans or is it that no one really cares about it? I just want to lay down, prop the ipad 3 up on a pillow and watch a video while I fall asleep and not worry about getting tangled up on cabling from headphones or speakers. Maybe I should develop an app that does this but I bet the sound dept. from apple prohibits this as I am sure there would have been an app for this. I have tried this little bomb speaker last night. I got it in a shop in florida when i visited my mom a few months ago: http://www.mobilefun.com/33624-kits...le&referer=G&gclid=CI_E8LPi6rUCFYWo4Aod_S0AfA

It works ok as I just want to hear sound but the little blue light is annoying.

I will just regulate the ipad 3 for the test app for work and contuniue to use the tab 2 7" for sleep inducing movie watching at night. Equalizer is a damn fine app for boosting volume. Gonna look into developing one for apple. May as well use the companies developer account for something.

There is an equalizer in the settings for the Music application but that does not affect things system wide. There are no apps that have the kind of global access to say "I'm making everything distorted via an equalizer so I can make it louder" and I'm kind of surprised anyone "can't believe" that one doesn't exist given the way Apple does everything about iOS.

For what it's worth, I have a 3rd generation iPad and don't feel the volume is a problem for 'in bed' viewing as at that point there is very little other noise pollution competing.

Not everyone is in a quiet environment. I usually have my AC and a fan going for white-noise as I cant fall asleep if the room is dead quiet. I left the burbs for that. Too quiet for me.

Have you tried cupping your hand around the speaker? Does that make it easier to hear? If it does, then a passive solution will work for you.

There might be a jailbreak solution, but I don't know if you're allowed to do that.

True, though that doesn't stop me from wearing them... better that than disturb my wife.

Must be an issue with your iPad (or your headphones), then. I've got bad hearing, and I have to turn the volume down or get blasted by the sound (using either Skullcandy earbuds or Sony behind-the-neck headphones on an iPad 1).

Nah, my hearing is above average, 23 khz last I tested. Maybe thats the problem. i hear everything around me and cant focus on low volume devices. My TF101 was even worse than the ipad. The tab 2 is much better on average but netflix streams are sometimes way too low and need a boost. But they have apps for that tab, apple dont and I dont want to JB it. I will order the plastic scoop.
