iPad and Applecare

So I recently inherited an iPad 64gb 3G. I would like to get it covered with Applecare. It's the least I can do to protect this since I got it for free. The iPad is for my wife and if anything happens to it I would like for her to be able to take it to the Apple store for repair / replacement.

My question is, will I be able to use it on this older unit with no receipt or anything?

I don't think they'll cover it, it's an older device and may crap out at anytime (their thinking, not mine.)

Yep, save $50 a month until it breaks and buy a new one, thats what I would do if I were worried enough about it.

You can buy AppleCare on any Apple device that is less than a year old, but not on one older.

I have owned two iPads and bought two more (as gifts). They have all been totally reliable. Since the iPad has no moving parts I don't see them as something likely to fail unless they are dropped.

AppleCare+ can have exceptions to the rule Don Vito Corleone said, but generally as long as the product is within its original one year warranty, it can be extended with AppleCare. For mobile devices that typically adds one year, for computers it adds 2.

This is clearly out of warranty I'd like to find something that will cover it outside it's manufacture warranty.
