iPad is too heavy

So I went to the mall to get my N4 ghost-armored (Matte finish! What a beauty!), and conveniently an Apple store is right next to it. So while waiting for my phone's to be armored, I went in and started playing with iPad mini and iPhone 5. They took SIMs out of all mobile devices for some reason so I couldn't make calls, but Facetime calls were possible using Apple IDs.

I was again impressed by the build quality and design of iPad mini. There is really nothing to fault for other than its low PPI for text. (and it doesn't fit in my jean pocket) I had my Nexus 7 with me and its camera was simply no match for mini's camera. When I bought one for my nephew last year I didn't pay much attention - especially its front camera - and today I got to appreciate its overall finish. Good job, Apple. Even though I will never use one, I have to give it to Apple for its design prowess.

Then I moved onto look at the real thing - iPad (4th Gen, Retina display). First impression? Too heavy. Last impression? Too heavy! I couldn't believe how my perception had changed. Having played with Nexus 7 for the past couple of months, and right after being awed by iPad mini's lightness, I couldn't get over how heavy iPad was. I have a first gen iPad at home that usually sits in the bathroom, but haven't really thought about its weight. Maybe it's because it's used in the bathroom, I'm guessing.

Now, I know that this statement makes just about everything else larger than 7" in the world heavy as well, but that's how I frankly felt. iPad did not feel portable enough - "portable" as in carrying it by itself. I feel like I need to put it in a bag when carrying it around.

I Feel the same way, which is why I got the mini . I had a Transformer for a while, but I didn't like the 10" form factor. I was debating between the 7" Nexus or the mini. I went with the mini since I already have a iPhone 4s and I wasn't impressed at all w/ Androids tablet experience. Maybe next go-around I'll try an Android phone, but we'll see.

Even compared to most 10 inch tablets the iPad 3 and 4 are on the heavy side. All those pixels apparently needed more backlighting and a bigger battery to power it all.

Though the 4:3 aspect ratio does kinda help at least keep the weight balanced. Still, I look forward to when I can ditch the 9.7 inch iPad for an iPad mini with Retina.

Amen, too bulky and heavy.

iPad Mini has really good form factor, however it needs a much improved display.

To me, if it won't fit in my pocket, then it must be lighter than a laptop. And it is. I never understood why people like the smaller tablets; you still have to carry the thing or put it in a bag. Give me the bigger screen and higher resolution, please.

I'll buy the iPad 5.

Yeah, this is probably as personal a choice as people liking smaller screen phones vs those over 4.5". Whatever works best for you right? At least Apple recognized the market and released the iPad Mini.

Agreed I love my iPad 4 but it is a bit to heavy, I hope they can slim it up and reduce the weight in future versions. I may try out an iPad mini in the future (with retina) I played with one and loved the weight/feel.

It's interesting how people praise Jobs as if he was the god of Apple, didn't he mock the idea of an iPad mini?

Just played with the Samsung Tab 7 2.0... installed CM 10.1 and it flies now. I think I'm really digging the 7" display. Ipad Mini is pretty awesome too.

I hope the Nexus 7's successor will be/have:

  • 7"~8" screen. If 8", make the bezels disappear so that the physical size of device is no wider than current Nexus 7. It's important because that's the limit of my pockets' widths!
  • Thin, thin, thin. iPad mini is 7.2 mm thin. Me likey. Nexus 7 is 10 mm. Make it thin like iPad mini. The thinner the better
  • Light, light, light. iPad mini is 310 gram. Nexus 7, 340 gram. Shoot for 250 gram or less.
  • No convex back. it's hideous.
  • Glass screen that are resilient to smudges and scratches. It's tiring to wipe clean finger prints.
  • Proper palm rejection so that handwriting can be a reality.
  • Higher PPI. 1920x1080 or 1920x1200 would be good enough. (but I won't complain for 2560x1600)
  • Unibody (or as close to it) construction.
  • Wireless charging that are compatible with other Nexus devices.
  • Keep micro-USB for compatibility. Don't think about new proprietary cables.
  • Same or better battery life.
  • etc.
I will pay more than $200 for it. Just make it work, Google/ASUS/Samsung/Whatever.

You need bezels on tablets, that's what you grab and that's why they all have them.

The iPad 4 is heavy. Rumors show that the iPad 5 will adopt the iPad Mini design. Slimmer, lighter, smaller bezel with chamfered edges.

It'll be a hard choice for me to choose between a retina mini or the new improved/lighter iPad 5.

I can understand the weight complaints of the iPad to a certain extent (I personally don't find it too heavy). What I don't understand is the thickness complaints.
