iPad Pro vs iPad Air 2 (soon to be latest version iPad Air 3)

iPad Pro is too big. My friends who have it like it, but say it's not an iPad to be held. It's an iPad to use on your desk. One guy never never takes it out of his home. The other guy does, but he uses it for work to an extent.

If I were buying soon, I would wait until March 15 and then decide on either the iPad Air 3 or the iPad Air 2. I like the iPad Air size, and sometimes take mine with me when I leave the house. I like its portability. The portability of the mini series is even better, but I don't like using the minis anywhere near as much. Too small. For me I either use my phone, or jump to the iPad Air 2.

YMMV.

Thanks Eug! I agree with you that the iPad Pro is to big to use as a portable device. Unless your keeping your tablet at home it doesn't make sense.

I just can't decide if I will be keeping it at home or using it on the go.

How do you carry your iPad Air 2 when you go out ?

I have a neoprene padded case. Either I just carry it, or if I have a bag or briefcase, I stick it (iPad + case) inside that.

They don't have the same price, so it's not a fair comparison. If money was no object, the Pro obviously. The Air for me is already beyond comfort for a hand held device, so between both of them as bed/couch or table top choices, I'd choose the Pro. If hand held was a requirement, the Mini all the way. The Air really has no relevance to me, besides that I can appreciate it has a space in the line up because not everyone wants to pay $800 + for a tablet.

Oh ok cool!

One last question for now do you think the Surface 3 is worth it ? Not the Pro.

The only thing I hate about it is the eMMC slow hard drive it has.

If I wanted an iPad Pro, I'd buy one, but I don't want one. Everyone's preferences are different, but I find the Air 2 fairly easy to hand hold. The Pro, not so much.

Weights:
iPad mini 2: 331 g
iPad mini 3: 331 g
iPad mini 4: 299 g
iPad Air: 469 g
iPad Air 2: 437 g
iPad Pro: 713 g

In other words, an iPad Air 2 only weighs about 100 g more than an iPad mini 2, but it's much nicer to surf on the Air 2 than it is on the mini 2 (or mini 4). The iPad Pro weighs almost 400 g more than the mini 2 however. But it's not only the weight, it's the size. It's kind of awkward to hold.

To me, the comparison of the Surface 3 is vs. a regular laptop. It's not as lean as an iPad, so the usage is somewhat different.

I'd consider a Surface 3 to replace my Windows laptop, but I don't think I'd get one to replace my iPad.

While it is truly a YMMV thing, I still find the Air too big to carry around while mobile. Especially once you put a case on it. I'm not saying you can't easily hand hold it, sure you can, when you're at home, sitting somewhere, or anywhere else you have leisure time. I'm saying when you're out and about, getting in and out of the subway or bus, carrying other things, or taking it in and out of your bag. Just ask your wife if she would rather carry an Air or a Mini in her purse every day, and you'll have my POV.

And like I said before, if this is a "mostly at home" device, the Pro stomps all over the Air, for factors other than just size. But it also cost more $...

Depending on what the Air 3 brings to the table, it may very well change my opinion. Better soc, better speakers, apple pencil support, are all things that could blur the line between them.

My sister puts her 11" MacBook Air in her purse.

I just got a pro with cellular and the admittedly overpriced keyboard cover and Apple silicone case. I'm thrilled with it so far. I commute on the train everyday for almost 2 hours round trip so it's great to read the paper on half the screen with my twitter feed on the other half. I consider it a lightweight laptop with a cellular internet connection and a fantastic screen.

It's definitely not portable like a typical tablet is though.

How much space does it have? Curious. Also what case did you get ?

You probably can buy an iPad Pro 9.7" in March. Mind you it will still have the same specs as the previous iPad Air 3 rumours. Just the name is different.

The only thing really up in the Air at this point is the amount of RAM. However if it does get called a Pro, it would be quite lame if it came with just 2 GB RAM. 3 GB minimum, with 4 GB preferred.

Buy an iPad Pro from a vendor like Amazon with a 30 day return policy, so you're covered if you want a 9.7 iPad Pro.
