I'm with the folks here who just don't see the point... No doubt it looks and feels very cool, and it's Apple, so it'll fly off the shelves. I just can't see a single thing that this device does better than the devices that are already on the market. It seems like more of a jack-of-all-trades that doesn't do anything particularly well, with the possible exception of iTunes integration (which, admittedly, is big for some).
-As an ebook reader, e-ink devices have a HUGE edge on battery life and eyestrain. All except the largest e-ink devices have a significant weight advantage as well. The only significant edge of the Ipad is color, but I don't see that as a huge advantage for most books (comics, manga being the major exception)
-As a productivity device, a dedicated PC/Mac trumps the Ipad in every department except for weight. Seriously... Name one productivity function that it does better.
-As a gaming device, dedicated handhelds win on every count except screen size. Apple's own Iphone/Ipod beat the Ipad in every way with the current content availability. Granted, this could change as devs target the larger screen, but I still find myself dragging out the laptop or DS for all but the most tame of games (and yes, I have an Iphone available to play on)
-As a multimedia device, again... What is the one thing this does better than a laptop? I suppose you could make the case that the complete package (screen quality and size, weight, instant-on, touch interface, battery life) make it a more attractive option than a laptop for multimedia playback, but the sacrifices you make in doing so (format/compatibility support, closed platform, added cost) outweigh the good in my book
Having said all of this... I'd snag one if money was no object (and that's a big qualifier). I'd love to add one more thing to my arsenal of gadgets. However, I just couldn't justify paying this kind of $$ for a device that doesn't best anything I already have or at least provide clear value.
