IPAQ 3835 $249 @ officemax

there should a $50 off $250 coupon for officemax.com somewhere..

I have a IPAQ 3835. It is Pocket PC ver 2002, but upgradable to 2003 version..
In my opinion, it's better than Ipaq 19xx and ipaq 22xx series..

How is 3835 better? It's 19xx and 22xx have better screens and newer processors.

the quality of IPAQ 3835 exceed that of ipaq 19xx or 22xx. the plastic of packaging of 19xx feels pretty cheap when compared to IPAQ 3835. The 3835's screens are bigger, battery last longer.

19xx and 22xx do have Xscale processors. However, most people can't tell the difference between a 400 mhz xscale and a 200mhz strongarm. Because programs need to be rewritten to take advantage of some xscale feature in order to see speed improvements..

also, the ipaq 3835 has a sensor that detects lighting condition and automatically sets the backlight level. This feature saves a lot of power because backlighting uses the most power.

the ipaq 19xx, 22xx screens are better. true. but are smaller.

at $200, i would get ipaq3835 instead of ipaq 1935..

3835 has a large list of known problems (some call it the "beta test" for the 39xx series). I don't recall all the problems, but it was like Compaq's "e740." It's a pretty heavy device with a relatively short battery life. The sleeves make it more clunky, though some people feel sleeves are uber important.

I think having CF is more important (it's pin compatible with PCMCIA, and you can add cards from radio cards, wifi cards, bluetooth cards, memory, etc. You can adapt it to PCMCIA to get even more cards in there).

2215 has dual slots in comparison. It's very lightweight and you can change the battery (battery life is already 6+ hours on that one standard 900mah batt). It's also the fastest PPC thus far IIRC. 2215's are more costly, yes, but it's a nice device that's done nicely.

Anyway, bump for a person looking for a 3xxx devices at a relatively low cost (those devices cost a lot to begin with).

What list of known problems? Dust problems, Reset SW problem, short battery life problem. those are all problems of the 36xx 37xx series! Not the 38xx series. The 39xx series are not much different from 38xx. The 36-37xx series have only 1000mah battery, while 38xx and 39xx series uses the SAME battery, 1400mah @ 3.7Volt. (55xx uses 1400mah @ 3.4volt)

There is absolutely NOT a battery life problem for the 38xx series.

Someone interested in getting an ipaq, should go read the reviews and comparisons.

FYI, I used the $50/250 coupon for another deal at OM and they called asking where it came from. YMMV.

38xx screen is NOT bigger, it's exact same 3.5". The fit and finish of 19xx is superb, I do not know what you're talking about. I have owned 3835 and I will take 19xx any oday over it. I have not seen or heard of any problems with programs running because of Xscale CPU, only problems I am aware of are because of new PPC 2003.

The site ipaqpetition.com is gone now, but an archived one is found here. In addition, the Brighthand thread with 37 pages of posts is

Yea, there's a big list of issues that not every owner may see, but quite a owners are going to experience some of these.

Personally, my buddy's ipaq 3835 has really bad battery life, and his memory (SD and internal) read/write speeds are fractions of my e740's read/write speed. Yes, the e740 was a poor device with many problems too, but I happen to be one of the lucky ones to get a relatively good one in the batch. But not everyone gets the good one in the batch....here. In addition, the device is really bulky for a single slot SD device.

The screen, yes, it's a 3.8" screen. Only some 3xxx family models, the 54xx, the 55xx, and the Toshiba e750 have the larger screen. And yes, they contribute to the device's size and weight.

The iPAQ 1945/1935 and iPAQ 2215 blow the iPAQ 38xx out of the water.

With the new HP iPAQs, you get native PPC2003 support, faster more power efficient processors (PXA255 on the 2215 and Samsung ARM on the 1945/1935). You also get integrated Bluetooth (1945 & 2215). You also get replaceable batteries.

Yes, the screens on the 19xx and 2215 are smaller, but they are of higher quality than the 38xx (HP didn't switch to the newer screen transflective tech until the 39xx series) and the pixels are closer together (denser) for a better quality image (320x240 @ 3.5" vs 3.8").

Not to mention the size differences. The 38xx is fuggin' HUGE and heavy. And if I'm not mistaken, I don't think that its SD slot is SDIO.

And don't get me started on the expansion slots. I used to have a 37xx iPAQ. It's bad enough with it "naked," but add on the expansion slots and it goes from bad to worse. Only makes it heavier and bulkier.

Given that the 1935 can be had for $199 after rebate, I see no reason to pick the iPAQ 38xx over it. You get a MUCH smaller PDA, full SDIO support, and. removeable battery. You could spend a little more and get a 1945 and get Bluetooth and a slightly faster processor.

And I haven't even started with the iPAQ 2215 yet. This is bar hand down THE best PocketPC on the market. It has an SDIO slot AND a CF slot and is still much lighter, thinner and smaller than the iPAQ 38xx. Sure, it's ~$350 if you look hard enough, but it's the BEST any PocketPC manufacturer has to offer right now.

$200 + tax is too much to spend on an outdated relic like the 38xx when there are newer and better devices out there for the same money.

IPAQ 19xx are smaller in form factor.

Maybe faster, but once you upgrade 38xx to WM2003. the speed advantage is little.

to me, 38xx ipaqs looks way better than 19xx, which looks like a toy.

Umm...the $50 rebate only works for items over $250, I checked this. $249 dosent qualify, making this a COLD deal... Besides, it has a slow processor and it's not transreflective.
