Found it at my local store here in West Palm Beach. This is a closeout price. No rebate needed. Comes with 64MB ram. If you check CompUSA's website (link provided) you can see if there are any avaliable in your area. There was one left in West Palm Beach after I purchased mine. CompUSA item number is 285291. Here is a link to the item.

I think they have pretty much cleared out their inventory when they had the 3670 for $399 - $100 MIR.

<< How is the 3670 different from the 3850/3835? Thanks! >>

The 3670 is a 64-meg unit with no built-in expansion, running the Pocket-PC 2000 operating system. The 37xx series are 64-meg units with no built in expansion running the Pocket-PC 2002 OS.

The 38xx series is new hardware with a built in smartmedia slot for memory expansion, and one model has built in bluetooth. They have 64-meg of memory, and run the Pocket-PC 2002 OS. Also, they have better color depth on the screen, and they fixed a hardware problem on the 36xx and 37xx series that allows only one button to be pressed at a time - this is important for action games.

The 36xx series *IS* upgradable (for $40) to PPC-2002 OS, but since it only has a 16-meg ROM, some of the upgrade goes into main memory, chopping into that 64-meg. Also, MSN messenger and 'Terminal Services' (or something like that) currently aren't available as part of the upgrade - supposedly they will be in the next few months.

The 37xx and 38xx series have 32-meg ROM's, so all the extra stuff fits on the ROM.

Whew - I think that covers the difference. Personally, I have a 37xx series - bought it about 2 weeks ago when they were $350 at Best Buy. I wouldn't bother with the 3670 myself - if you hunt you can find a 37xx for that price, and it'll have the PPC-2002 operating system and 32-meg ROM already...

JMHO.

I agree with HHO, the 37xx is definite worth it, with that extra memory and rom space and ppc 2002... I can do a lot of things my friends couldn't do with their 32mb units and i have a lot more program in the rom with the ppc 2002... ie the msn messenger... it's totally awesome.

Thanks for the summary guys. So basically, all the 38xx have over the 37xx are bluetooth support and the built-in memory slot? Otherwise, the hardware is the same? Or does the 37xx not get the better screen and simultaneous button press fixes that the 38xx get? Thanks again!

Hell yeah. Sorry to say it, but pocketpc is far superior to palm. Almost anything, if not everything you do on a palm, pocketpc (with its hardware) can do it faster, better and with full color graphics and sound.

I think the biggest flaw in palm is its input methods. Why write one character at a time, when you can write a sentence at a time in pocketpc?

The 3700 series has the same plasma crt screen as the 3600 series. This screen only supports 4096 colors whereas the new 3800 series supports 65K colors and uses 60% less power. This is just one of the improvements in the 3800 series over the 3600/3700s. If you can afford it the 3800 is no doubt the way to go.

BTW - the 3870 is the only model with integrated bluetooth. IMO this is a waste of resoures as there are virtually no bluetooth devices available despite an industry commitment to produce such devices. The 3870 also has a non-removable 2" flex antenna that it uses for bluetooth connectivity. This antenna is a pain in the @ss. If you want bluetooth connectivity, buy one of the blutooth expansion pack available in a ouple of weeks from Compaq. These expansion packs add the same bluetooth functionality of the 3870 to the 3600/3700/3800 series and since it is an expansion pack, it can be removed when not in use.

The 3800 series uses MMC/Secure digital cards for memory expansion instead of SmartMedia as someone mentioned earlier in this thread

The Pocket PC is my opinion is far and away better than the Palm. The software is more integrated with applications that I already run, ie: Outlook, MS Money, Messanging clients, audio players.

I also have to use Compact Flash memory as it is my choice for my various digital memory perpherils.

I love my iPaq but I have to say I also loved my Prism. Of course to get the equivelent color, storage, and multimedia capabilities of a Pocket PC you would probably have to spend just as much.

The most important question you should ask is 'what do you need?' I started off needing something to take notes, be a glorified address book, and provide me amusement with games. When I wanted more storage I added a Memplug module and stored stuff on a compactflash card (not that I would ever use up the 64MBs of space on that card). When I wanted pictures I got a eyemodule. When I wanted to play MP3's I got a Minijam. Of course towards the end my whole package cost quite a bit.

Now with the pros of each:
Palm
- Easy to use and to learn to use (It took a while to get my Pocket PC setup because it's not as simplifed to use, but it's more intergreated with the system).
- PC or MAC (Don't believe Pocket PCs work with MACs)
- Graffiti (I think Transcriber is great but a bit difficult to use I prefer using the keyboard on my iPaq), if you get a word completer program you can have words completed like with the pocket pc. I don't know what foggy is talking about the one work at a time...
- Small programs
- Easy to transfer running programs/games between Palms (I don't believe you can just beam programs from one Pocket PC to another and have it just run)
- Lots and lots of freeware (not that Pocket PCs don't have tons but Palm freeware outnumber Pocket pc freeware)
- Doesn't crash (hate to say it but Pocket PCs sometimes freeze up or act quirky until you reset the thing)
- Better battery life (my Prism with it's MP3 player on can last several hours but my iPaq with it's MP3's have about an hour of battery life)
- More variety of accessories (when I first got into Palms there was almost nothing besides cases that you could get for them. Now every store has stuff for the Palms, but the stores need to start getting more stuff for Pocket PCs)

Pocket PC
- Excellent multimedia capabilities (of course a Palm, not matter what most people say are not built for multimedia and those that are usually cost as much as some Pocket PCs, ie Clie or my setup as noted above)
- Great filing system, never had that with the Palm
- as Hgabriel mentioned more integration with Windows software
- Better screen (of course that can also depend on your Pocket PC, some early HPs look dim and washed out)
- Better integration with PC, when connect to the PC I can have full access to the Pocket PCs files and edit or add to them as if it was just an external device (not sure if this is just within XP but I find it much simplier than working with the Palms)
- Faster processor (not that this is nessacarliy a bad thing for Palms, they just don't need the speed for what they usually run, that's where the multimedia issue comes in. If you need to run movies, music a faster processor may be needed.)

There's probably is more but I can't think of any more (also taking too much bandwidth). Just look at what you need and see what fits. Don't spend $400 for a Pocket PC when all you need is a $100 - $200 Palm for basic notetaking, games, and address keeping. But on the other hand don't spend $100 - $200 plus $200 in upgrades when you want multimedia or more on a Palm.
