Very reliable Apple insider, Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman, recently shared some interesting insights into the iPhone 16 family in his weekly Power On newsletter.

Gurman says the Action button introduced on the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max will also be available on non-Pro iPhone 16 devices.

Better yet, Gurman says that “at least” the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max will also include a new dedicated camera control button.

Gurman believes this button will operate like the shutter release on an interchangeable lens camera, including half-press for autofocus and full press for image capture.

The insider adds that the button’s surface will also include some sort of touch sensitivity, allowing smartphone shooters to swipe the button to zoom in and out while snapping photos and recording video.

The iPhone 16 lineup's new Capture Button will be able to detect multiple levels of pressure to emulate a two-step shutter button from dedicated digital cameras, according to a Weibo leaker.

MacRumors was first to reveal the presence of a new button on the iPhone 16 models called the "Capture Button" last year. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman remarked that the Capture Button will be able to record video and The Information reported that the Capture Button will add features like the ability to zoom in and out by swiping left and right on the button, and focus on a subject with a light press.

Now, the Weibo user "Instant Digital" corroborates that the Capture Button's main function will be to trigger image or video capture, but a light press will enable the user to adjust focus. This is effectively the same functionality found on most DSLRs and mirrorless cameras, where the shutter button features two stages: Pressing it down half way locks in focus or exposure and pressing it down all of the way capture a photo. The leaker added that the debut of the Capture Button reinforces the iPhone's pivot toward photography.

As explained in an early look at the iPhone 16 prototypes, the Capture Button will be located on the bottom right side of the ‌iPhone 16‌. It will take the place of the mmWave antenna on U.S. ‌iPhone‌ models, with the mmWave antenna to be relocated to the left side of the device below the volume and Action buttons. Non-U.S. models do not have a mmWave antenna that needs to be relocated in order to accommodate the Capture Button.

The reason half-press is a standard camera feature is because, by default, cameras will use the centre of the frame for both focus and exposure readings. (Yes, there are a million exceptions, thanks to features like intelligent metering, face-priority, and computational photography, but it still remains the case for many shots.)

The problem with this is that the most aesthetically-pleasing shots often don’t have the subject in the center of the frame. The so-called rule of thirds is one shorthand approach to obtaining a pleasing framing.

Let’s look at a few examples …

In this shot, the default metering would probably have been fine, as the face and background trees are in similar lighting, but the initial focus was on the trees. Centering her face, half-pressing to lock the focus, and then reframing before fully pressing the shutter release enabled me to very quickly ensure her face was in focus.

Similarly here, the default focus and exposure would have been on either the sky or the statue, and the same approach of centering her face, half-pressing, reframing, and shooting took just a couple of seconds.

Apple doesn't normally add buttons to the iPhone; if anything, the Cupertino company seems determined to remove buttons.

However, that trend has started to shift as the action button was added to the iPhone 15 Pro last year. As of right now, the Action button is configurable, and it can be set to open up the Camera app and then be used as a shutter button. Of course, the volume button has always been available to take a picture.
