Except that high-end watches are often waterproof/resistant AND sapphire. My MBW-150 smartwatch is both and it is several years old. I am convinced that they are trying to get more money for less with the Sport model purely because "it's lighter!"

I would assume the Sport one will be the cheapest model based on its materials, but we shall see. Certainly I would agree that it would make little sense to charge more for a watch with a lesser crystal. As you say, sapphire is the default material for high-end watches, including divers watches capable of being worn at extreme depths, so the use of glass on the Sport model has nothing to do with waterproofness.

I'm thinking 6+ for me and the wife due to better battery life and better camera. She always carries a purse anyways. I might just get me a case that has a belt clip, which my iPhone 5 Otterbox case has but I never used. I always get heavy cases for our phones anyways because the kids are constantly dropping the phones.

according to the verizon website, they start at 12:01am PDT.

i have 2 phones on my account and 1 of them doesn't have an upgrade until october 14th of this year, but they changed it for me so i can upgrade both at the discounted price.

does anyone know what the discounted price is for the iphone 6 on verizon? like how much off you actually get with it now?

You mean the contract subsidized price? I think it's the same as Apple what advertised: 199, 299, 399 and 299, 399, 499. A contract free phone ip6+ (64gb) for T-Mobile is listed at $849 vs. 399 for subsidized. So the subsidy is only $450. I swear it used to be more.

oooh okay maybe that is it. it's been so long since i upgraded on vzw that last time i did you got a discount even on the subsidized price, like $100 off or something. but now that you mention this, i do remember reading i think that verizon got rid of the whole "upgrade at subsidized prices whenever you want as long as you start a new 2 year contract" thing a while ago.

There had an additional credit for trading in your old iPhone when the 5S, don't know if they still do that, but you're talking about something earlier. First smartphone I got was a Verizon 4S and that was the standard price.

Fuck, it just occured to me that 12:01 PDT is 3:01 EDT. That's really gonna suck.

thanks for the feedback. i'm coming from an ip4 so it will be a big change for sure. my wife has the 5 so i know that size and am comfortable with that size for sure. she wants the 6 and not the 6+. i'm just not sure which i want.

i definitely am not sure how i feel about having that big ass object in my pocket either. that is another thing that i'm concerned about overall.

Heh, I printed out that pdf as well. I wouldn't have a problem putting that in my cargo shorts or cargo pants, but jeans would be tough. I don't think I could sit down with it in my pocket. And thats without the Spigen case that I would expect to have on it. The consensus around the office was the the regular 6 would be about right.

yeah i'm torn because my wife is definitely getting the 6, and it would be nice to have a 6+ so i have both physical devices to test out when developing for them. although, the iphone simulator is actually great (ESPECIALLY compared to the android emulators) so i might just use the emulator instead.

still like 50/50 on which i'm going to get.

guys is the back material on the 6 the same type of material as on the 5 that chips away so easily?

Aluminum?

It's anodized al-U-min-EE-um, so... yes? The space gray is different from the black from the iPhone 5, and is generally hardier I think.

The disc on the back covering the sensors is supposedly sapphire like the front, but the Sport has glass on the front so I suspect it has glass on the back as well. The case is aluminum, stainless, or some special kind of "harder" gold depending on the series (Sport, standard, or Edition).

Edit: if you mean *black* material as I suspect you did, then I'll say that it probably depends on the version you buy (black stainless standard vs. space gray aluminum Sport).

Nope. Only Sport is cased in aluminum. Even if they were all cased in aluminum, the actual back is glass or sapphire.

He was asking about the 6 vs 5. I interpreted that as iPhone 6 vs iPhone 5. And nothing to do with the watches.

The Flint Center has been around forever. My understanding was the building they built was separate from that. I could be wrong on that.

Apparently they built the white structure strictly for the demos.

Seems kinda wasteful to just tear it down. They should leave the building intact for DeAnza. it would probably make a nice museum.

Any thoughts on the leather vs. silicone cases? The cases I've had have always been hard plastic. Don't see any non-Apple "basic" cases, so I guess I'll have to go with one of those.

If you want it in a case at minute 1, then yes that's the way that you'll need to go. I'm actually eyeing that midnight blue leather one myself, even though I usually go case-less.

I use Apple's leather case for my iPhone 5s, and it works well. Although, I'm not 100% sold on the new 6 and 6+ leather case for one reason: it doesn't appear to protect the bottom (I/O + speaker + mic side). The 5/5s leather case protects the entire bottom of the phone (as shown here), but if you take a peek at the 6+'s leather case, there clearly appears to be a cut-out at the bottom (as shown on the Apple Store page). I prefer protection on the bottom because it help protects the finish when I plug in cables in the dark (when going to bed, etc.). It also adds a bit of protection if you drop your phone and it happens to fall on that edge.

I do like my 5s leather case. It's fairly spartan, the Apple logo isn't terribly pretentious (you can barely see it), and price-wise... it's not bad? I used to use a TPU case from monoprice before this, and honestly... they both work just as well, but the big selling point on the leather case was the full protection.

EDIT:

Oh, and one other good thing. I dislike how the Monoprice cables have way too big of a hole for the camera. The cut-out ends up showing off some of the secondary color, which I don't like. As you can guess by my insistence above, I prefer as little of the metal showing as possible. Also, Monoprice only appears to have cases for the 6 not the 6+.

UK pricing is better than expected IMO.

16GB
£619.00

64GB
£699.00

128GB
£789.00

It'll be interesting to see how much of a subsidy my mobile phone provider will give for the 6+.

I'm hoping the "silicone" is actually TPU. I absolutely cannot stand the soft-gel type cases.

Belkin Grip Candy Sheer is my favorite TPU case for 5/5s, but the camera opening is a bit larger than Apple's case.

I also love the Incipio NGP for iPad mini (I also got the newer one for mini2 w/ Retina). Incipio Frequency seems to be the best one for iPod touch 5th gen.

For my iPhone 5s I just use a $1 clear tpu soft case from eBay. Works great.

The only issue is that the Lightning port hole varies in size from supplier to supplier. The first one I bought has a big enough hole for my stock Lightning cable and all the 3rd party MFi Lightning cables I bought. It seems a lot of the 3rd party MFi cables have larger connectors.

So, I ordered another couple from eBay and they all have a slightly smaller port hole, which is big enough for the stock cable, but not big enough for 3rd party MFi cables.

The no-name cables fit fine, but they suck for quality, and they are not MFi certified. BTW, not sure if the no-name cables still work in iOS 8, because they all broke long ago so I couldn't try them.

Anybody notice that Apple has pushed out the new U2 album to all iPhones.

I checked my phone, and it's there but only as an available download. Not sure if you think it's a bad thing, but that's really the same as any other album that I haven't downloaded yet.

Is that U2 album only available on your iPhone? I downloaded it on the phone but can't seem to get it on my Mac.
