iPhone 3G 3.0 non-software SIM unlock?

Hey, guys,

I'll be going to France in about a week and am wondering if anyone knows a MECHANICAL unlock out there so I can use a different SIM card. I'm trying to avoid software unlocks if at all possible because I'd rather not take the risk of bricking my phone. I recall that for version 2 of the iPhone OS, there were "piggyback" SIM cards out there that would trick the phone into thinking it was connected to an AT&T SIM card, but I can't find one for 3.0.

Any advice?

Don't worry about bricking your phone. It's ridiculously hard to mess it up bad enough to not be able to recover. I've completely botched jailbreaks and have always been able to go into recovery mode, reload the stock fw, and try again.

Speaking as someone who recently used one of those piggyback sim cards on a 3G phone in Germany, Austria and Poland, I would highly recommend you avoid them and just use UltraSnow. They are flaky to get working and unreliable while using them and I never did get 3G to work. Besides which the method they used to use - IMEI and carrier spoofing - is illegal. I can't remember the name of the piggyback sim thing but it was highly recommended and - to be fair - it worked fine with T-mobile USA and it did mostly work overseas. But ultrasnow is better and works much more reliably.

Bricking isn't a concern with the new ultrasnow method. It's running as a resident process in the background rather than overwriting bits in NVRAM on the the baseband firmware.
