I find your paranoia a little troubling given your profession, which I share. It's ridiculous to call AT&T's holding you to the terms of your contract a "lack of business sense."

I was joking about the "fake" part, BTW.

Most ways to garner customer loyalty involves going above and beyond. They have every right to "hold me to my contract". I do not have to like it or agree with their business (lack of) sense.

BTW, does my contract state that they cannot give me the same deal they are giving to new customers?

AT&T is being Penny-Wise, Pound-Foolish.

I can't believe all the friggen whining .. it's a fvcking phone for christ sake. You got two options ... buy it or don't buy it. If you can't afford the price that ATT is asking then don't buy the damn thing. This seems to me to be a simple case of "I gotta have it because it's newer than what I have". If you don't like ATT and their "practices" then cancel your contract, renew with someone else, get something other than the iphone, and STFU about it.

I have a 3G .. yeah a 3GS would be nice but it's not worth 399 to me right now. So I'll wait til I can get the standard upgrade price. All the subsidizing has already been hashed over a zillion times. I don't understand what the fuss is all about or where the logic is failing. This is how ATT is doing it. Period. You don't have to like it. You don't have to agree. If you hate them that much then go somewhere else. This is the price you are going to pay if you have the need to be on the cutting edge. Always has been, always will be. You don't think ATT knows that you want the iPhone that bad .. they are in the business of making money .. not making you happy. Speak with your wallet and do everyone a favor and stop bitching.

There is no reason why ATT can't tack on another 2 years to the contract. And honestly, its pretty goddamn stupid of them not to at this point. The way they are fucking up is not going to look good when they beg Apple for another year or 2 of exclusivity.

If they were smart (which up until this point, they are not) they would allow people to add 2 years to the contract (making it 3 years total), guaranteeing the huge profits from the $80+/month. Instead, they will lose all these customers to cheaper/faster/more competent Verizon/Sprint/Tmobile/etc once the exclusivity is over.

The difference in this case is the phone itself. There has never been a phone like this (with new hardware on a yearly basis) and I can't figure out how they can be so blind as to turn away 2 years of huge monthly service profits over milking loyal customers for and extra $200 up front.

I can't believe all the friggen whining .. it's a fvcking thread for christ sake. You got two options ... read it or don't read it. If you don't like this thread and its "whining" then cancel your account, sign up with someone else, read something other than this thread, and STFU about it.

I do not understand why people whine so much about other people perceived whining?

I disagree. Are you or your wife dumping your iPhones or leaving AT&T because of their decision? Unless you are, AT&T is losing absolutely nothing by being penny-wise here.

AT&T knows that less than a fraction of a percent of current iPhone owners will dump their phone or service because of this policy. With their exclusivity contract, they are the only dealer in town, and they have a lot of users addicted to their product.

It makes no sense for them to do that. What if they want to raise their rates in two years? What if they change their service plans in two years?

Signing you up for 3-4 years or more of service could mean lost revenue down the line.

Where they are being pound-foolish is that it is so much easier to keep a customer than to get a new one. If AT&T (or any company) does not cultivate customer loyalty, as soon as the customers can leave (whether it be now or later), they will.

I just got to thinking, I wonder how long it will take the jailbreak community to enable to Voice Control (and maybe even video record) features on the standard iPhone 3G

If you honestly think they can raise the rates any higher than they are and stay in business, you are a complete idiot.

Any way you look at it, they are willing to piss off their loyal customers over $200 rather than lock them in for another guaranteed $5000. That is not a smart decision.

It also means the instant the apple exclusivity is over (which seeing how badly ATT is fucking Apple and the customers over should be next year) they will lose massive amounts of customers to other competent companies.

Apple does not seem too pleased with them which most likely means exclusivity for 1 more year will be denied. Why the fuck would ATT not want to lock in as many people as possible for 2 more years before everyone leaves?

I had no idea I could resell my iPhone for so much. I was figuring I could get a hundred bucks or so back, but it sells EASILY for the 300 range on craigslist. Most people are trying to sell their 16 gigers for 400+. Wow.

ok so let me get this straight...if im renewing a contract do i get the phone for $499 plus $18 or $199? Whats everyone bitching about for upgrades? Am I correct in thinking that the only people that have to pay $499 are the people who already have an iphone and just want a new one and their contract isnt up yet (as in, hasn't been two years)?

Used iPhones hold value because you can put your ATT sim in one, activate through iTunes, add a $20/month data plan, and come out waaaaay ahead of the 2 year bend over contract you have to sign to get the perceived good deal on a new one.

If you want one, then I highly suggest going to a at&t or Apple store and order it now.

Go order it anyway. You can always cancel it if you don't want it, with no penalty.

Why don't the people who want to upgrade sell their old iPhone and use that money towards upgrading to the new one?

If you sell your old one for $300 you would be good to go.

crap, guess that means there will be shortages.

how does it work if you buy it from apple? is that only for people who want it for 499/599? since its not a phone store, i dunno. probably sounds like a dumb question.
