No FM tuner, guess that was wrong. But cool, any comments on availability (I'm presuming July and my 1st gen is about ready to be replaced)

June 19th for the 3GS.

They also lowered the price on the 8GB 3G to $99.

I wish they offered a discounted upgrade option for current 3G owners.

EDIT: Fixed date.

What will upgrades be like for us 3G folk? Surely the $199 price is with a new contract, right?

That's how the 3G upgrade worked. Existing iPhone customers could get the new phone with a new 2 year contract for the upgrade price. I assume that's how this will go also.

Is it a 2 year extension or replacement? I'm in Canada and adding another 3 years to my existing contract would be a real deal-breaker.

June 19th, not the 16th. And sucks that voice control is on the 3GS only.

Yeah I don't understand that. What stops the 3G from getting that feature? It's too useful (for driving, etc.).

It's a fairly underwhelming announcement, although it's what was to be expected. The camera will still suck (it's a product of the tiny lense size), no one will be able to take advantage of faster 3G speeds due to AT&T (not that bandwidth is the limiting factor in iPhone usage right now anyhow, so long as you're actually getting 1Mbps+), and most of the rest of the features are on the "meh" side of things.

The only significant change is the hardware upgrade, which I can't really comment on until someone actually announces the technical specs. I'm assuming we're looking at 256MB RAM and a slightly faster ARM. I'm not sure any of this is worth giving up the ability to jailbreak at the moment.

If nothing else, you can pay the early termination fee to end your 3G's account, and then start a new account for the 3GS. In either case it's going to run you $400+.

2 year contract

I will not be getting the new 3GS, but my wife may be getting a new 3G for $99. I will have to talk to her about it tonight.

Any word on what "new" features the new iPhone has that will translate to the old 3G via the 3.0 update?

Im guessing the extra processing speed helps with that.

I'll gladly start my contract over, if I can get the 3GS. LTE on Verizon will take at least that long to get here.
Is the screen the same?

Third-party applications aren't segregated by processor speed. Of course, the 3GS will run everything faster, but I don't see how being slower excludes the 3G from having this feature, when it will still run every other application that a 3GS can.

The extra upfront cost of the 3GS is 1/20th of the price of the 2-year contract. I find it hard to believe that $100 on a $2000 contract is preventing you from buying a better phone.

I checked on Apple's site, and the form told me (an existing 3G customer) that I would need to pay $599 to upgrade to the 16gig entry-level 3GS right now. Here's hoping Apple/AT&T will announce another offer for the existing customers to let us upgrade to the new product for $199 and a contract extension.

I hate to say it, but I'm kinda glad this years update is more incremental. Saves me from wanting to upgrade

I can't see why they wouldn't let 3G customers upgrade with a new 2 year contract. They did it last time so why change things this time? I want the new phone for the capacity increase alone, but I certainly won't be doing it if I have to pay full price. If I remember correctly, this same issue was debated over for quite a while before AT&T said existing customers could qualify.

I would like to upgrade to 3GS, but I can count on my hands the number of times I have wanted video on my 3G. The main compelling reason to upgrade is the Compass, and I haven't really needed that, would just be nice to have. I'll stick with my 3G and wait for next year's upgrade.

the 2x speed increase, 32gb, and better battery life don't do it for you? Certainly does it for me

The difference is, the 1st gen iphone was not subsidized. Still, they should let existing customers upgrade for the same price as new customers.
