the 2x speed increase, 32gb, and better battery life don't do it for you? Certainly does it for me

Ehh.. yes and no. I'm going to go into the store and do a side by side comparison of speed to see the real difference. AT&T isn't allowing a $199 upgrade. If they were, I would do it in a heartbeat. I still have money left over from my birthday, so I could use that for it. But I can't stomach $399 for a slight increase in speed, as much as I want the new phone.

They also lowered the price on the 8GB 3G to $99.

I wish they offered a discounted upgrade option for current 3G owners.

2 year contract

I will not be getting the new 3GS, but my wife may be getting a new 3G for $99. I will have to talk to her about it tonight.
The extra upfront cost of the 3GS is 1/20th of the price of the 2-year contract. I find it hard to believe that $100 on a $2000 contract is preventing you from buying a better phone.

Are you married?

MotionMan

No, but does the institution of marriage mandate that basic concepts of value get lost along the way? I would honestly be surprised if your wife rejected the extra $100 upfront if you presented to her the entire cost of 3G vs. 3Gs over two years.

I want the new phone for the capacity increase alone, but I certainly won't be doing it if I have to pay full price. If I remember correctly, this same issue was debated over for quite a while before AT&T said existing customers could qualify.

The difference is, the 1st gen iphone was not subsidized. Still, they should let existing customers upgrade for the same price as new customers.

AT&T doesn't feel the need to subsidize your phone that much, since you are already locked in.

Heh.. it's a matter of perceived "need", not value, for most women.

Eh, the new GS still has that crappy plastic casing? I was reading rumors about a matte back casing. I really HATE the cheap feel of the 3G case as compared to my 1G aluminum back. Video is nice, extra storage is nice, extended battery is nice but I haven't experienced anything on my 1G phone that really warrants those upgrades. I don't really have a huge need to take video, I have more then enough room on my phone for movies and music, I keep a USB cable handy when I drive and it charges so I don't need that.....eh, weak.

Hah. The problem with that conclusion is that it implies that most women are irrational.

Most men are too though. Anyone who buys a 3G over a 3Gs is pretty stupid. If you can't afford a 3Gs, you can't afford a 3G either.

I can already see the eyes of wives across the country glazing over as the economics are explained.

I would think you could. I mean, people claimed they noticed performance changes even with the 2.0 software update, right? I think if the processor gets bumped up a bit and the memory doubles you would feel a big difference.

Ok.. just found out that if you are over a year in with your iPhone 3G contract, they will let you buy the 3GS for $199. So looks like I will be upgrading come August. I can hock my 3G on eBay for $200 easy.

I probably shouldn't reply to this post, but I don't see how the 3GS blows donkey balls? The only thing it's missing (minus AT&T's crappy attitude) is background processes. I agree, that's huge.. but I'm confident that will come with 4.0.

Yeah, I'm thinking the same thing. The question is, do they add another 2 years to your contract? I just got a brand new, replacement 3G...I'm wondering what the better play would have been, ditching it a week ago (I mean, I could probably get $400ish for a brand new 3G before the announcement) and then paying the full fee, or waiting until I'm eligible (some time in September) and doing it then. Hrmph. I'd probably rather have it now. Although that'd mean like 2 weeks without an iPhone. Oh well.

Where did you find that out?

Also, can you migrate app purchases between iPhones?

https://buyiphone.apple.com/

It's been confirmed by news sources via Twitter, but you can check for yourself there, if you're over a year on your contract.

App purchases are tied to your iTunes account, not your phone.

edit: should have just read kmax's response.

The one-year discount is not the fully subsidized amount. In fact, when I entered my information into that site (I am 15 months into my 3G contract) this is what they are offering:

As a valued AT&T customer, AT&T can offer you an early iPhone upgrade with a new 2-yr commitment and an $18 upgrade fee. You may qualify for a standard iPhone upgrade on 03/17/2010.

* $299.00* ? 8GB iPhone 3G (black)
* $399.00* ? 16GB iPhone 3G S (black or white)
* $499.00* ? 32GB iPhone 3G S (black or white)

Keep in mind the MSRP of the 32GB is $699 without a contract.

Way to screw your existing customers, ATT and Apple.

You can't be 15 months into a 3G contract.. it came out in July of 2008. At most you are 11 months in. Here's a snap of what my page says. Notice I'm eligible for a "standard" rate on 8/21/09, which is when I bought my 3G.

How is anyone getting screwed? Have time left on your contract, you still owe AT&T about $200 in iPhone subsidies.

I received the same message as FP. I guess I will just wait until my two years is up in September next year. Kind of crappy of ATT to do this to current customers though.

Something may be screwy with their system, too. It's giving me a date of 12/12/2009, even though I bought my iPhone 3G on launch day.

Pulled the trigger already. The 3g speeds now seem worth it to me for the extra $15/mo. That's what was holding me back before.

I'm crossing my fingers that AT&T gets MMS and tethering enabled sooner rather than later. I don't understand their "logic" in delaying those.

When a new customer gets a better deal than an existing customer, that is called screwing the existing customers.

In this case, existing customers have to sign a new two-year contract, so, in effect, they become new customers again. If existing customers could just upgrade without a new contract, then I could understand the difference in the cost of the phone.
