I'm looking to get a car mount for my phone now that I have one. I use pandora while driving and also use the GPS sometimes, however it would be a lot easier to just have it clipped infront of me over the dash somewhere.

I did some research today and the best one I've seen to hear about is the one by pro clips.

http://www.proclipusa.com/

They have the one that will fit specific to my make and model, 2003 VW GTI 20th AE, however the price is like $78 shipped.

So I'm wondering if anybody has one they use that can be had for like 1/2 the price, or even less.

Thanks.

thanks man I'm going to check that out.

i'm still going to search and see if I can find one that mounts lower than ontop of the dash thoug. i like the location of the mount from proclips, but again i just don't know if I want to spend 4x the price of that one you linked heh. don't know if it is worth it in the long run.

EDIT:

also on the one you linked, it is hard to tell ... but i'm assuming the top of it where the headphone jack is located is freely accessed right? i have a tape adapter to get the output over my speakers.

i'm also assuming that it will fit fine in the mount with a thin case on it?

i bought this for my gf and put it to use once for her so my recollection is not pinpoint. it does fit hers and she has the stock apple bumper.

this one is a combination bean bag base with a suction cup mount.
the base has a surface to put the suction cup. i believe the suction cup could be used on the windshield as well, or any other flat surface.
don't think there's anywhere else in a car where it would mount securely so if you want it elsewhere, this might not be for you.

the legs that clip the phone to the mount are adjustable, in that you can slide it laterally so it won't block the headphone jack or the top button.
to be honest, the plastic isn't the highest grade, and the mechanism to hold the phone isn't the greatest (doesn't glide nicely, uses spring loaded mount to squeeze the phone tight), but it gets the job done. the phone is not going to slip out. the spring is pretty strong.

I don't know how well those work but I would never trust it considering how I drive...

the base is very heavy and holds the whole thing in place. the bottom is some rubbery compound that keeps it from sliding. it doesn't budge at all.
it's similar to the garmin bean bag mounts. very secure.

ok cool thanks for the input.

my wife has a garmin and the beanbag thing for that works just fine for me and her, so I know how the whole beanbag thing works.

if i don't find anything soon i may just bite on that.

Jesus, people. Beanbags don't work unless you drive like a Grandma.

Suction mounting to your dash using the included glue-on disc is the way to do this, for any accessory you need to put on the dash. I buy those discs in bulk and have a variety scattered around both my cars for my Droid, GPS, camera, etc.

I wouldn't trust suction mounting either. I don't drive like a grandma.

Color me skeptical.

I might look at one of those clips for the dash, but I wonder if that will overheat my phone or cause condensation issues if I have the cooling on?

suction cups always fall off, my radar detector never stays on. I dont use it anymore for that reason alone.

There's a HUGE difference between your radar detector's tiny little passive cups mounted to the windshield and an 80 MM, lever-actuated, shape-reinforced cup mounted to a clean rubber disk. I know, I have both. The one I have for my camera is rated for 4 pounds and suggested uses include the side of a motorcycle helmet, surf/snow boards, etc.

Even on the greasy windshield, my phone mount will hold my Droid in place when I am storming super-bumpy backroads in my super-stiff S2000 with modified suspension and the top down, which I can pretty well guarantee is producing violent G-forces well in excess of any situation you're likely to see.

I love my proclip and I don't have to deal with suction cup issues like I do with my radar detector.
