So just bought my first smart phone ever and I am not quite as satisfied as I thought I'd be. Mainly because I found it hard to to type things without making loads of typos. Does anyone else also have a problem with this?

Part of the iOS keyboard is learning to trust it. The autocorrect in iOS is pretty good at correcting all those typos. But it does take awhile to get used to the software keyboard and lack of haptic feedback.

Also, there are smartphones with physical keyboards...

I too have a hard time dealing with soft keyboards, though the iPhone's is one of the best. Even after having used Swiftkey on Android (imho the best soft keyboard in existence) I am still surprisingly satisfied with my iPod touch's soft keyboard.

You only have so much time to return it, but unfortunately, it takes longer than a couple weeks to get used to all the ins and outs, especially if it is the first smartphone you've ever had.

I hated the iOS keyboard at 1st, but after a few weeks I adjusted and fell in love with it. If you adjust it'll be great to use. I've used a ton of other phone and a bunch of Android 3rd party keyboards. I'd easily take the iOS one over every single other out there. Just give it time and you'll see.

I'd say give it time and you'll see. I got used to typing on my iPod Touch pretty quickly. The learning curve isn't too steep compared to some other things, but it WILL improve. And for how small an iPhone is, it's surprisingly good. I'd like to see ANY Android keyboard on a 3.5" screen perform that well.

I went from a BB to my iphone 5. I type in portrait mode majority of the time. It definitely took a lot of getting used to from the BB with a physical keyboard but I did get used to it.

Also, I've had an iTouch, a Samsung Instinct in terms of touch phones. They all need some getting used to, but eventually you do.

Now, i used to be able to type without looking at the keyboard on my BB, don't think I'll ever get used to my iPhone enough to be able to do that.

Install a different keyboard.

This. Learn to let go. And proofread before you submit.

dictate to Siri might be an option,si ?

You know, I've been doing this more and more for text messages. I thought at first the dictation option was stupid and worthless, but when I'm traveling in the car and someone wants to have a text conversation with me, I'm finding it very easy to do it this way.

And the recognition on the iPhone 5 is working way better than the 4 I had jailbroken Siri on to.

Same here, I use voice to text a lot on Android. It's a life saver.

It never gets any better, either learn to live with it or get something different. I have had my 4S for just about a year and texting on it sucks just as bad now as the day I got it. I love the phone, I hate the keyboard and the fact that Apple does not allow 3rd party alternatives.

Trust it and learn it. Everyone has to start somewhere.

I just typed the above blindly with loads of typos and the iOS keyboard fixed everything.

Don't go back and try to fix every little typo, just keep typing through and it'll fix it.

When I switched from WinMo it was the hardest thing to do. I had trained myself for years to hit backspace and fix mistakes.

Pretty much this. Even if there's a mistake, I just let it slide. 1 word isn't going to change the overall message of my texts.
It corrects almost everything, I just mash the screen so that my finger gets close enough to the word I am trying to type and it fixes it.

I don't think I would go back to a hardware keyboard as in my previous phones.
