Doesn't suprise me. With my TPU case I doubt my S2 would have a scratch on it, infact... I know it wouldn't because I have fumbled my phone once already and it got a nice toss onto the concrete.

I've always said lighter doesn't mean less duable. If anything lighter may slow the fall and cause less damage.

SGS2 is like the weight of an ant to a mouse, in comparison. Lots of things going into that design that reduce trauma.

But I didn't expect such a huge difference in that test.

The Galaxy S II weighs 116 grams. The iPhone 4S weighs 140 grams. That makes the iPhone 4S about 21% more massive than the Galaxy S II. The iPhone 4S doesn't really weight that much more than the Galaxy S II, it just happens to be a lot more dense.

They'll both fall at the same speed, though. Neither object has sufficient mass to cause increased acceleration towards Earth. If the iPhone 4S was as massive as a relatively large object (such as the moon), then you could argue that it would fall faster.

The iPhone and Galaxy S II should both take about 0.43 seconds to hit the ground from three feet, and 0.56 seconds to hit the ground from five feet.

Basically, this all says that there's no excuse for the iPhone 4S breaking so easily aside from mediocre build quality.

I've seen an ip4 look like that just falling out of a car, other phones seem to be more durable during such falls. One thing that's always annoyed me about the iphone is that you basically have to get a case for it, otherwise it looks like hell and/or it will break on you. It's a nice looking device, but it hardly matters since everyone covers it up with all kinds of crazy cases.

The ip breaks because it is sealed. Nothing to give. Thats why the glass breaks all over. There is no flexability.

LOL I dont get how this is much of a surprise. Wouldn't buy an iPhone if I was worried about drops. I haven't dropped my phone in probably 2-3 years, not on concrete! My wife has dropped her iPhone4 off the bed a few times onto our tile floor. no damage. It's in a normal SPECK case that apple gave her, nothing thick or anything.

I def. wouldn't rock an iPhone 4/4S in the nude though, just asking for trouble to me lol

Physics is not your friend.

It's not my job I could have researched it first since I haven't dealt with physics in a LONG time. You are completely right, it is not my friend. I figured bigger case and lighter would make a difference, and I imagine it has to, just that it is very very small and won't have a impact on the... impact?

Not that I drop phones often, but this makes me wonder if the case I bought is up to the task! I don't want a big ass Otterbox on my phone.

Not a surprise, Galaxy S II is made out of plastic which won't easily be broken. It's cheap and has no weight to it.

so high quality devices are easily breakable

also

iphone 4s is not much heavier or massive than the galaxy s ii

it is, however, much more dense

density != weight

Because that nearly 1oz of weight makes all the difference? An aluminum unibody would have been better. It still feels nice, but gets rid of that stupid glass back. I mean really, what does that add other than more surface area to break?

And plastic doesn't mean cheap, but it sure can feel that way.

Not a GS2, but I dropped my Galaxy Vibrant on the concrete floor at Home Depot. More specifically, I had a durr moment and in pulling the phone out of my pocket, for some reason I had an arm spasm and threw the phone a few feet down the isle. I was so freaked out. The back case popped off, battery squirted out and I thought I killed the screen. Picked it up and not a scratch.

I think people overly obsese over phones and how easy they are to break. Unless it's an iPhone, then they have to defend why it broke so easily.

only holds true when you negate air resistance.

what about a piece of paper 8.5x11 and your iphone 4?

One brick doesn't have an appreciable amount of extra air resistance when compared to another brick that is slightly different in size but same relative dimensions.
