Other than LTE and camera stuff the jump from 4 to 5 was not significant IMO. until there are ip5 exclusive apps its all the same pretty much.

If she's fine with the iPhone 4. Save your money and wait until she's ready to upgrade. By then Apple might have released the next version of the iPhone. She's pretty much guaranteed iOS updates for the next 1-2 years and though the phone will start feeling sluggish if she's ok then like I said no reason to upgrade just to upgrade. Some people have the feeling like they need to upgrade every two years or even every year, but if your girlfriend is the type of person who doesn't then save your money and wait. The best way to stay future proofed is to save your money and buy later.

While your idea is good in theory, he would be leaving money on the table.
If your iPhone 4 is still "good enough", renew contract to get the iPhone 5 at subsidized price and sell it for a profit.

So I bought the iphone 5 for her today, I gather from the AT&T guy that it'll be here next week. I was told by him that in order to get "Apple care" for the phone I need to return to that store before activating it in order to have it covered. Is that true, or can I pick up an Apple care from anywhere?

I'm not sure if that's true.

All apple devices have 1 yr applecare by default.

Applecare+ is the premium which covers accidental up to two times for 2 yrs. This is something you have to get in 30 days. Do not get any kind of warranty from the carrier.

No it's not true. In fact you don't even have to go to the apple store. You can just call apple and do it over the phone.

You have 30 days to get Applecare Plus. Plain apple care is given by default.

If you want apple care+ you can get it at purchase. If not you have 30 days to do so at an Apple store after a brief inspection.

I'm not sure how carriers do it at purchase, but Apple can take care of you in any case. I haven't tried through the phone.

For future reference, its best to get your iPhone directly from Apple instead of the carrier (if you're not switching carriers.). I believe Apple has a longer return policy and less hassle when it comes to exchanges.

Yes. You can just call apple and order it for each phone. I've done all my users iPhone applecare ordering by calling apple and not having to go to either the store or calling the carrier.

Plain apple care is given by default.

There is no plain Applecare for iPhone. There is the standard one year warranty and there is Applecare+ which is $100 up front and will extend the warranty for two years and cover accidental damage.
