I agree we shouldn't be parading this 64-bit upgrade like it's the best thing since sliced bread. Why not just toss it to the side like the things that us users here don't care as much about like camera flash. It's nice to have and let's just leave it there.

This. It's a good thing to have on top of a simply faster CPU. Just leave it at that.

I was wondering about this too, but it looks like it's only stored on the phone.

Or at least that's what they claim.

/conspiracy

Well I was being tongue-in-cheek but nowadays I'm a bit more paranoid.

Looks like the NSA will be getting a database of 500ppi fingerprints up and running.
Heh.
I wonder if those that are skeptical of NSA on Android(an open source OS in which anyone can inspect the code) would be skeptical of this finger print feature iOS7(a closed sourced OS) as well.

Seriously though the finger print stuff looks very cool and unlike those people, I won't be wearing my tinfoil hat and getting my panties in a wad over such a feature if I were to buy an iPhone.

It's a better phone than I thought it was going to be that's for sure.

It also means the iPad refresh should be awesome. 10" iPad with a re-designed shell, A7, maybe 2gb ram, finger print scanner, and so on. And then hopefully a retina mini with an A6 as well as the finger print scanner. I was planning on keeping my 3rd gen iPad for another year, but now I'm thinking I should sell it now and pay the difference to upgrade.

The incremental camera improvements look good, otherwise I'm not really interested about anything in either phone.

Pricing, iOS 7, fingerprint reader, color options, etc don't look enticing.

Especially them featuring the color options for the C.
The saw Nokia and Motorola offering color phones, so they decided to do the same thing.
"Can't innovate anymore, my ass", my ass.

Boring event.

5S is nothing big and was leaked before.

5C brings down the price of entry, but also leaked before.

They didn't even update MBP.

How come I'm the only one not excited about this? Hm...

I'm sitting on an upgrade, but going to dump Verizon, keep my 4S, and switch to Pageplus. A 5S would be a big upgrade, but not ~$1800 over 2 years nice, no phone is to me anymore. I'm doubly excited about the impending iPad refresh though after seeing what's in the new iPhone.

-The fingerprint sensor looks cool.
-I always welcome camera improvements whether it's the sensor, lens, image processor, etc.
-The 5c looks great. I can see this selling by the buttload.
-iOS7. Cribbed features or not, the improvement, overhaul, everything I'm sure will be well received.

It doesn't matter if its 100 apps that each take up 1 gb of memory. 64 bit doesn't help that at all.

Uh, yes it does, at least on Windows and Linux systems. If you have a 32bit OS and try to run 100 apps each using 1 GB of memory, you are going to be swapping to the hard disk because your OS limits you to a little less than 4GB.

If there is some method which Apple is using in iOS which makes this a non-factor, please enlighten me, because based on what I know you can't address 100GB of memory with a 32GB OS, whether it's split between 100 little apps or not.

64 bit has no influence at all on multi tasking. It's primary benefit, in the desktop area, is the fact that on 64bit a single program can allocate more than 3.2 gb of RAM for itself.

Wrong. The primary benefit is that you can install and use more than 4GB of RAM in your system, without resorting to broken work-around methods like PAE, which doesn't function correctly with many drivers.

Does anyone else have something similar to the TruTone flash? One of my big complaints about camera phone photos...

You guys are missing the point.

This means future iPads will also be 64-bit.

The way people are using tablets for more and more tasks, iPad is more likely to benefit from 64-bit architecture sooner than the iPhone.

Putting it out on iPhone is just the practice round. iPad will be the main event.

64-bit is a necessary step at some point. It's just hard to be enthused whether it's introduced in the 5S, 6, iPad Mini retina, etc. Not really a selling point of the device itself, so I'm just going to ignore it when it comes to recommendation time (I'm not an iPhone user myself).

Still have the gall to charge $100 for memory increments - Apple certainly could have helped shift base phones to 32GB, but didn't. Everyone else has shifted to $30-$50 increments - wow to $100 for 16GB to 32GB - for something like $9 more in BOM.

The 5C doesn't look like a bad phone - but still, you used to be able to get last year's flagship at $99 on contract - now it's last years phone in a cheaper shell for that price. <edit> And now confirmed $550 off contract - seriously lol for the 'budget' iPhone. </edit>

Everything else was meh except the fingerprint sensor - not revolutionary, but a good feature to have and should come on more phones.

I am too. Other than the much needed iOS overhaul, faster CPU/GPU. I'm pretty disappointed with this launch compared to others. I guess I'll be preordering my note 3 on VZW.

I'd much rather have the One Mini for that price on contract.

Off contract, that's current Android flagship money. HTC One, SGS4, Sony Xperia Z, and even the new LG G2 are around that price.

I'm curious if 64 bit ready mobile phones will become the new 'thing' that every phone has to have in the coming year? That seems like something they'd push more than the finger print scanner.

Wow so they just phased out the 5. I would prefer a 5 over a 5C...

After watching the event my wife feels no reason to upgrade. She wants to hold onto her 5 for another year at least.

Did we get any kind of word on how fast the fingerprint scanner works?

Here's the thing. We always knew Apple was the bad guy when it came to price extortion for memory. However, our savior Google isn't doing any better by releasing 8gb/16gb Nexus 4s and removing all SD cards.

If you expect Apple to move the industry when they're supposedly stagnant and the last to change, then I would implore Google to move first.

It's on the Apple store now - somewhat laughable to me.

$550/650 for the 16/32 5C
$650/750/850 for the 16/32/64 5S

Absurd. To me fair would have been:

$450/550 for the 16/32 5C
$600/700/800 for the 16/32/64 5S

But that to me is reasonable in Apple terms given that they do the +$100 per 32gb.

You know, someone brought this up in another forum. If your phone is stolen, it'll have your fingerprints all over it.

The 5C for that price is ridiculous.
