Nothing new. A friend who just got the 6 Plus had the same thing happen to him when the Galaxy S4 launched. He put it in his front pocket and drove home. Out of the pocket, a bent, no-longer-functioning Galaxy S4 emerged.

So how do people carry these huge phones if they can't use pockets? I'd lose it for sure if I carried it in my hand all the time.

I wish they hadn't only put the optical image stabilizer in the 6 Plus. I shoot a lot of photo & video on my iPhone & all of my gear is made for smaller devices (steadicam, tripod mount, etc.).

Yeah, I'm not sold on the size of the plus, but I was considering it for the upgraded camera. Decided to wait for the S rev to see if they put OIS in the regular 6. Glad I did now that its turning out the plus is susceptible to bending.

That threads hilarious, I can't tell if the "it's your fault for putting your phone in your pocket" crowd are trolling or serious.

According to the OP's edit, people in the thread were assuming he used his back pocket until he clarified and reiterated that it was his front pocket.

Regardless, this is nothing new.

5/5s have been known to bend in front pockets, but it has never happened to me.

My friend had it happen to a brand-new Galaxy S4 on launch day. He drove home with it in his front pocket and it was bent when he pulled it out.

That depends on how easily it happens.

If it's just the occasional outliers (which it hopefully is) then it's not much of an issue, if it happens through normal usage then it is something new.

Hmm, I hadn't thought of that. I frequently pull my ip4s out of my pocket when driving. :hmm:

I love my Mountek nGroove Snap car dock. It comes with little plates that stick to the magnetic mount. It works perfectly and I don't have to keep my phone in my pocket while I drive.

You can adhere one of the metal plates to your phone or case. Instead, I just sandwich the plate inside the phone's case. For other phones, you can put the plate under the battery cover. For iPhones, you don't have to worry about covering the antennas because they're all at the top and bottom. Some Samsung phones have NFC in the battery compartment, so you'd probably have to worry about blocking that.

This: [link]

You can mount it in a CD slot (who needs that when you have a smartphone?) or wedge it into a dashboard seam. That's how I mounted it in my cheap Chevrolet Aveo. With Bluetooth, the iPhone 6 Plus makes a killer music / GPS system.

FYI: The newer version of the mount doesn't have that ugly yellow sticker. I bought one for my friend as a birthday gift and it was black with the "M" logo.

Yeah. iPhones typically sell way more at launch than competitors. Initially, it seems most of the blogs are reporting the same 2 incidents. Now every future incident will be featured and highlighted, but I'm sure it's not a wide-spread problem.

Since I actually knew someone affected at the (much smaller) SGS4 launch, and haven't known anyone to be affected with the iPhone 6 Plus, I can anecdotally conclude that fewer iPhones are bending versus the SGS4.

The same guy who had the bent SGS4 now owns a 6 Plus. Since that SGS4 incident, he scrambles to buy an Otterbox ASAP whenever he gets a new phone - but that it wouldn't have helped him then or now because the Otterboxes weren't available at launch. He changes phones all the time and had a Galaxy Note 3 before getting the iPhone 6 Plus.

i saw that the galaxy note was not as easy to bend as the 6 (Plastic vs. Aluminum)

Hard plastic vs a malleable metal.

If the case has thick sides and isn't made of a soft plastic or leather, it will increase structural rigidity over a bare phone.

The case would need to be more rigid than the phone. A plastic case (at least not one of a usable size) is NOT going to be more rigid than a phone.

Now the metal might be malleable but the case is going to be elastic. Its going to flex then return to its shape. The phone is just going to flex with the case... and then stay there.

Now a stainless steel case would work but...

man, idevicechecker.com has come up empty for me, even though it says they're in stock. Called the store, and they said they had none.

I don't think this is entirely true; if the case is a TIGHT fit on the phone, the phone will bend when the case does. If it's a looser fit, the case can bend before the phone does.

In neither of those situations is the case preventing the phone from bending.

Oh? If the case sticks out enough around the phone, then the jeans pocket will need to exert force on to the case, to in turn exert force on to the phone. That means more force is required to bend the phone. Draw up a force diagram or something. A case will help.

My wife is due for an upgrade from her 4S. We buzzed down to the local Apple Store today to get a hands-on with the new phones. The plan was a 5.5" iPhone 6 Plus with 128gb. She didn't like it - too hard to stick in the pocket, too annoying to move the thumb all the way over. Tried out the 4.7" next...still too large for her tastes. She felt that both of them looked huge & ridiculous talking on them I have a 5S & she didn't really like the extra height, so the 5S/5C were out. She opted to stick with the 4S until it dies.

I've heard this from a lot of people over the past week...they prefer a pocketable, one-handed smartphone. I do miss my 4S a lot, it was one of my favorite smartphones.

my gf loves the 5.5 form factor. Of course, she carries a purse with her all the time, and she never texts with one hand... different strokes for different folks!

I agree. I was surprised to see how large the smallest iPhone is now. My brother got 6 regular and I compared it to my 5S. Such a big phone, it would be borderline too big for me. I'm hoping Apple offers a wee bit smaller one next time around.

after having the 6+ for a weekend, and the 6 for 4 days now, while i do like the size, i agree that i think the 5 is the ideal size in general. it is simply the easiest to use with 1 hand and the screen is large enough.

but who knows maybe in a week or two i'll be saiyng the same thing about the 6.

You'll fast get used to the 6. Even on my 4 I was never a big one handed texter...just too slow. I would open and use the phone for apps/surfing one handed...and that I've had no issues with yet on the 6. It's one of those things where you'll get used to it...bigger isn't always better, but I'm more than happy having the 4.7" screen.
