I believe with most phones, the blurring is strictly a software filter effect that is applied to the original image. Apple is using the image from one lens and the depth data from a second lens. It is still a software solution from Apple, but they are using data from a physical lens to create the blur effect rather than just a software algorithm applied to the data collected by a single lens.

At least that is my take on it.

My M8 have a separate camera for that purpose as well. The dual lens solution apple is using is really not even necessary. Same quality from a single camera yields similar quality effects. I really don't see the ip7 yielding awesome or even better results from other products versions.

Interesting. I didn't know that about the M8.

From another article I was reading it seems that there was at least one Lumia phone that did proper background blurring as well.

You're the one claiming specific Android phones do the same thing, by model, LOL.

Posted and quoted.
Heh. That's pretty funny

Anyhoo, the camera effects on the M8 got pretty mixed reviews. We will see if the iPhone 7 Plus does any better or if it too will get mixed reviews.

Yeah, it just gets old, people forget their post history is searchable, LOL.

I enjoy being called a dick too, thanks Oyeve. How about an apology for the name calling and for you being wrong?

I find the battery performance to be on par with the 6 I traded in. Reading stuff like that makes me glad I'm not addicted to my phone. By the time I put my phone on the charger at night, I usually have anywhere from 65%-85% battery remaining unless I'm out camping and signal is weak. But on an average day, I have more than enough battery.
That is how I am too. I have no need for a phone at work since I'm on a computer all day. I do use it to listen to music for about an hour at the gym during the week. Then when I get home I put it down and it's usually on vibrate so I don't see it much. Later on in the evening when I'm doing development on iOS however I will have my phone, but at that point it's plugged into my laptop and it's charging anyways. It's typically 100% when I go to sleep at night so usually I don't even bother keeping it on a charger overnight.

Here there is no noticeable edge bleed in Paprika's fur at the top of her head, but that may be because the background is close behind her. It's also a somewhat similar colour, albeit with much less light. Maybe some edge bleed is at the top edge of the stair nearby, but you don't really notice it.

Here the edge bleed is more obvious, at the top of her head. You can also see a jarring transition from the blurriness of the stair edge to sharp focus just to the left of her right ear.

In this beta form of the portrait mode, you really need the right lightning and right background to get an ideal shallow DOF. But then again, even with a dSLR, you can't just shoot portraits willy nilly. However, the requirements with the iPhone is going to be different from the requirements from a dSLR.

Hopefully though, some of the bugs we've pointed out will be corrected or minimized in the release version of this feature, by say 10.2.

Also, again I say it's really too bad the 2X lens has no optical image stabilization. This is going to be a feature they add for iPhone 8 Plus, and by that time portrait mode will be much more mature too. We 7 Plus buyers are truly buying a transition device.

I mean, aren't they all transition devices? Even the retina display introduced in the iPhone 4 has evolved over time. Now it's 1080p, with the DCI-P3 color gamut. The 6s was a transition device because although it was the first to have the taptic engine, it grew and evolved into the engine in the 7. The iPhone is an evolving design, each leading to the next. Features will be improved and grown out with each iteration until they are mature or replaced with the next version.

No, IMO. The iPhone 4 screen locked in the Retina pixel density for years to come. Yes, the size changed, but the ppi stayed the same. Even now, the 7 still has the same pixel density as the 4, despite being 6 years newer. Only the Plus variants have a change in the pixel density.

The 4 was the beginning of a new iPhone era. The 7 is the end of its era. That said, I still bought the 7 Plus because despite being a transition product, it's still excellent, and I was overdue for a new phone (as my previous one was 3 years old). I'm not as enthused about the regular 7 though.

.

I would have skipped the 7 because the 6s on my desk is already plenty fast, but I can actually save a little each month by upgrading, so why not? Also, Jet Black.

With the promotions, I was out of pocket about $400 to upgrade 3 phones.

If I had the 6s I would have skipped the 7 too. In fact, I might have skipped the 7 if I had the 6, although the 1 GB RAM in that would have made staying with it difficult. It's a different situation with the 7 Plus though, since it's got the dual lens camera and 3 GB RAM.

However, the decision was easier for me, since I had the 5S, and I was also sick of not being able to use Apple Pay. For Apple Pay it was esp. true in my case since my Amex is not a chip or NFC card, but works with Apple Pay. (I have an old grandfathered Amex that is no longer available, but has a better cash back plan than their current ones.)

I really wanted dual OIS and smaller bezels, but just couldn't wait that long. Had this release had that, I probably would keep the phone 3 years. Even just the dual OIS would have been enough.

You have a beautiful cat.
Heh. The old gal thanks you. (She's 16.)

This bareback silver is great for hiding fingerprints. It always looks pristine, except on the shiny Apple logo.

I got my 128GB matte black on Friday. I like it a lot. My only complaint is that I don't like getting haptic feedback when I swipe to delete a message or scroll to the top of a menu, but turning that off also disables the feedback for the vibrate switch and for plugging it in, which I want to keep.

Is there any way to disable access to widgets from the lock screen? On my 6s I am using the raise to wake option which is useful to me, but I have accidentally called someone twice already because I have the favorites widget and it's only a swipe and a tap away when the screen turns on.

That's a pleasant surprise. The 7 Plus (2900 mAh) seems to charge as fast or faster than the 5S (1570 mAh), despite the much, much bigger battery.

The 5S maxes out at 1 amp or 5 Watts, but the 7 Plus will do over twice that. (I didn't test the 7 Plus, but the 6s Plus will do something like 12 Watts.) My wife's 6s only does about 8 Watts though, according to my Kill-A-Watt meter, but that's OK since it's only 1715 mAh, which means it should charge faster than the 5S.

I have mine set up that nothing shows on the lock screen but the time, and the player controls. It's in Settings > Touch ID & Passcode. At the bottom, "Allow Access When Locked".
