Quick early impressions as an early owner (standard iPhone 7, 128GB, matte black):
- Surprise, the camera is much better in low light and has a shallower depth of field. This isn't new in the smartphone world, but I'm eager to see how Apple's image processing plays into that -- some rivals mess up white balance, exposure or other key settings.
- It's very fast. Not that I was expecting less, but it's a tangible difference even coming from the reasonably speedy iPhone 6.
- The haptic feedback home button is initially weird, but you get used to it. I actually consider the general feedback throughout the OS to be more noticeable: that subtle tap-tap-tap when you're scrolling through a list, for example. It adds a tactility that you don't get even on other phones with haptics.
- The headphone jack adapter has a very solid connection and is generally unintrusive. You likely could just leave it attached to your favorite headphones and not deal with it after that. Not so hot for people who have multiple sets of headphones or plug one pair into different devices, but it's fine for someone like me.
- Matte black is the business. It seems even darker than slate on the iPhone 5. Of course, I immediately covered mine up in a case (the official black leather case), but it's still slick.
- Speaking of the leather case: it's now a better buy, since there are distinct buttons on the outside. They feel more like an extension of the phone itself.
