Yep. Silver in da house here and it looks great.

The antenna bands are why I chose the silver over the gold and rose gold, based on the pics. I have a gold 5S and my wife a rose gold 6s, and the white antenna bands still stick out. Plus, it should wear the best since it is the native colour of the metal, and it matches my MacBook Pro.

Jet black seemed like a bad option in terms of fingerprints and scratches, and matte black, while looking good, just seemed like the one people were buying to announce they had a 7.

Mind you, had there been a baby blue like my now defunct iPod mini, I would have bought it.

Photos of your grey 7 please?

You use a translucent cover on jet black so you don't get scratches and fingerprints. That is what I would use if they sold it in 32 Gb

I like the matte black, always been a fan of the hot rod look, and a dark front bezel.

Note that I didn't clean it before hand, but you can't see the fingerprints on the back of the phone.

I find that if you use a soft TPU clear cover it looks funny at times because the cover sticks to the back of the metal and gives it a different wet-like appearance. Right now I have a cheap bumper on (first pic), but I've ordered a Spigen case with grey sides and clear hard back. I wanted the white sides to match the white front, but it was not on sale. Actually, the case I ordered is made for the Jet Black.

I hope it's thick enough to account for the camera sticking out. My bumper isn't thick enough so the phone rests on the camera lens when flat on a table.

In regards to screen resolution, if it is not broken, don't fix it at least for another year! I think if and when Apple moves to OLED displays, the 4.7" and smaller models will get 1080p. And 5.5" May get QHD (2K) resolution.

DisplayMate rates the iPhone 7 screen the best mobile LCD screen they've ever tested.

---

The display on the iPhone 7 is a Truly Impressive Top Performing Display and a major upgrade to the display on the iPhone 6. It is by far the best performing mobile LCD display that we have ever tested, and it breaks many display performance records.

Things that are not "broken" get fixed all the time. You do not know what you are missing until you see something better.

I would've appreciated a hike in resolution, but at the same time: I'm surprisingly okay with the visuals on my iPhone 7.

I'd say it's really just a combination of the wider color range (when relevant), the brighter output in sunny conditions and the performance... it still feels like a new phone, even if things aren't razor sharp. I wouldn't be in a rush to upgrade if I had a 6s, for sure, but I'm not regretting the 6-to-7 upgrade so far. Let's just hope that the 2017 redesign includes a resolution increase.

I am very, very pleased with the screen on the 7 Plus.

Significant improvement over the 6 Plus, and sharp at my viewing distance.

I came from a Note 7 to the iPhone 7 Plus (and before that the Note 5), and to me the iPhone 7 Plus screen looks great. It's not better than the Note 7, but to my eyes it's just as good. I honestly can't tell that the resolution is lower. Granted I'm not using the two phones side-by-side to compare, but I still think the iPhone 7 Plus holds up great.

I did not say the screen is bad or anyone's eyesight is lacking. Calm down.

Eh.

They're only comparable when it comes to basic Internet sharing of basic pictures. Sure, it's a majority use-case, but saying that they're comparable is a bit disingenuous to me.

If I were hiring a photographer for family pictures, I certainly wouldn't pay them if they showed up with just an iPhone 7.

Just the fact that a phone is comparable to a $3,500 camera is amazing.
Not really that comparable, but for snapshots it will be enough.

I have Canon 7D to which I mate a Canon EF-S 60 mm f/2.8 macro lens (96 mm equivalent) for shallow DOF portrait shots and it works great as a portrait lens, but the thing is so big in comparison to a phone and I have to stand quite far away from the subject, so I rarely carry it around with me. Despite the software issues, it will be great having this iPhone feature with me at all times.

I didn't get a chance to really use it myself on my 7 Plus, but did a couple of test shots inside today.

Portrait mode on:

Portrait mode off:

There is fringing/bleed in the portrait shot, but it seems mostly just in the area where the lamp is reflecting off the case in the top left. I'm thinking the software doesn't know where the border of the object is exactly here. But as a friend mentioned, none of my friends will care. They will just see the shallow DOF and think it's great. (Well not this picture, but others where it matters.) And to a large extent, I think he's right.

I can also hope that some of these issues will get corrected when 10.1 release and 10.2 come out. When you run the portrait mode the first time, it quite clearly tells you it's in beta, which is actually out of character for Apple, since the entirety of 10.1 is a beta after all.

Er, didn't Google introduce this as a post-processing software feature? Where you could selectively blur parts of the image giving the "portrait" effect? Plus, isn't Apple just doing it software as well?

I'm not trying to completely disparage Apple, as this is a first iteration, but seems like the best thing would have been to put a larger and higher MP sensor and lens. How accurate is the depth sensing aspect? Multiple sensor definitely offers plenty of interesting applications, but this portrait mode didn't need it, and the zoom is not that impressive. And as far as I know they're not really leveraging other things they could do much if at all.

Also it highlights exactly why I hate this iterative advancement in the whole industry.

The depth mapping that this feature uses is a byproduct of there being two cameras on the device. It uses technology from LiNx, a company Apple acquired, to create data the image processor can use to craft a 3D terrain map of its surroundings.

This does not include the full capabilities of the Primesense chip Apple purchased back in 2013 (we have yet to see this stuff fully implemented), but it’s coming.

Now unless Apple has been putting the hardware necessary for this in for a while and will software update, we keep getting this "its coming", where we can kinda start to see some promising things that bring real tangible improvements, but its so slow and so fairly straightforward things still offer the best real improvement (for instance, Samsung going to 12MP with larger pixels and changing the lenses brought significant improvement to low light performance; we've seen the potential of just putting high MP sensors in as well, as those do tend to show more detail and it has benefits for things like bokeh effect).

For a side note, has anyone checked out the DxO camera module? I hadn't heard about it at all until I went to the site after googling it (I'd forgotten what it was called and never see it referenced on here any more, but it was pretty popular for a while there). $499 is pretty high (and I'd personally put that towards something like the Nikon 360 camera), but seems like there's still plenty of room for a company to make some real camera add-ons for smartphones that would get low-hanging fruit. For instance, I feel like Apple would have been better off making a case that housed an improved flash and lens (a big lens with an electronic mechanism allowing it to adjust a bit to offer some zoom as well as other focal capabilities, all controlled by the phone; and as a bonus it could have provided a 3.5mm jack for optional headset/mic, and even a battery boost for those that want it; it'd be heralded by everyone, and they could sell it for $200 easy). Of course with the placement of the camera itself, it limits what Apple could offer for the lens (which yes, putting it where Apple does limits the camera bump, but still just seems non-optimal).

A few brands did this post process. Now apple is doing it. As far as more MP I don't think its necessary. Apple has been on the low-end of the MP numbers yet year after year they prove their pic quality is either good enough to very good. Sammy dropped their last couple of lines 2 12 mp and they take great pics. Instant focus and all that. I am interested in the 2x optical zoom quality of the 7+ but no one I know has one and my users at work who upgraded only got the regular 7.

You can do all sorts of stuff manually through post processing, but the whole point here is not to have to do post processing manually.

I can also do all sorts of other things on my dSLR (and now iPhone I guess) by shooting RAW and post-processing the crap out of it, but most of the time I just want to take a damn picture and have it look decent.

I'm not trying to completely disparage Apple, as this is a first iteration, but seems like the best thing would have been to put a larger and higher MP sensor and lens.
I respectfully disagree. This is a great, great, great feature to have, if implemented correctly. One of a few things I've always hated about smartphone cameras is the deep depth of field. It almost always makes portrait shots on a smartphone look cheezy and crappy. If they can get this to work consistently and reduce the edge blurring, it will be truly great. If it stays the same as it is now, it will merely be good.

I couldn't give two chits about a higher MP sensor. Actually, I'd be happier if they just made Live Photos smoother instead of the 15 fps or whatever they are now.

How accurate is the depth sensing aspect? Multiple sensor definitely offers plenty of interesting applications, but this portrait mode didn't need it, and the zoom is not that impressive. And as far as I know they're not really leveraging other things they could do much if at all.
Another thing I hated most about iPhone cameras is the lack of zoom. Now they've got that covered as well, with a 2X zoom. No, it's a not a 10X optical zoom or anything, but it's a huge step forward for iPhones.

Apple literally addressed two of my of biggest two biggest issues in iPhone cameras in one single release. Now what I want to see is further improved low light performance, and optical image stabilization on the "telephoto" lens (because currently only the wide angle lens has OIS).

Apple isn't the first, but nonetheless, it's a great feature to have on an iPhone.

Also it highlights exactly why I hate this iterative advancement in the whole industry.
People don't design revolutionary products every day. Things need time to progress. Now granted, Apple also tends to "iterate" its releases in order to keep momentum in its sales, but it's not as if Apple actually develops and builds camera sensors. And for the portrait mode, they bought that a few years back by paying $20 million for a company called LinX.

Of course with the placement of the camera itself, it limits what Apple could offer for the lens (which yes, putting it where Apple does limits the camera bump, but still just seems non-optimal).
DxO would never sell that thing in super high numbers. Basically it makes a simple interface and form factor suck. I'd rather just go whole hawg and take my Canon 7D instead, or perhaps a Sony RX100.

I don't see this as low-hanging fruit at all. It's a tiny niche market, and one that can't even compare to Apple Watch.

I've been saying for a while now there is no reason to upgrade from the 6s to the 7. I'll expand on that now, now that I have had on my 7 Plus for several weeks and have been able to compare against my wife's 6s.

Even if I were coming from an older phone and wanted to buy a new 4.7" iPhone, I would likely not get the 7. I would probably get the 6s. And that's for me, a phone geek. For the wife, I'd definitely get the 6s. The A10 Fusion SoC is quite nice, but not critical. iOS 9 on the 6s lagged occasionally here and there, nothing bad but it seems even less noticeable on iOS 10, particularly in Safari surfing. The main things of true relevance in the 7 line IMO are the new wide gamut screen, the 3 GB RAM, and the dual lens camera. However, the 7 is missing both the 3 GB RAM and the dual lens camera. So the only thing it really gains is the new wide gamut screen, which IMO isn't worth the price difference. And of course, the 7 loses the headphone jack. Not a deal killer, but an annoyance. I guess water resistance is another factor, but it's never been an issue for us, and the 6s already has very good water resistance even if it was never advertised. Furthermore, the price difference is based on models with the same 32 GB or 128 GB storage. Even better for many people would be to get a closeout 64 GB 6s model at a lower price than the 128 GB 7, making the price difference vs. the 7 even larger.

In contrast, I think the decision between the 6s Plus and the 7 Plus is a no-brainer. Get the 7 Plus. Should you upgrade from the 6s Plus to the 7 Plus? Probably not, but if you're coming from say a 5S and want a 5.5" iPhone, the only option is the 7 Plus IMO. Even with the lost headphone jack, the 7 Plus is a big jump over the 6s Plus.

P.S. I think one reason they didn't advertise the 6s' water resistance was because it has a headphone jack.

Memorygate. Hopefully not too many of you buy the 32gb storage option.

http://m.gsmarena.com/the_32gb_ipho..._slower_storage_our_tests_show-blog-20943.php
This is the same as SSDs, the more discrete NAND you can parallelize, the faster the storage is. I'm not saying it's 'OK', but i'm also not surprised. Apple is, to my understanding, treating these as SSDs, with their own designed-in-house controller.

Also, it would be 'storage-gate', if it were a gate at all, which is isn't.
