I wouldn't be surprised if the carriers (AT&T in the US) get a portion of Apple's 30% cut from application sales. It's pretty standard practice. Bandwidth isn't such an issue when there's (potential) revenue attached to its use.Originally posted by: aphex

Apple probably refused to give a cut of iTunes store sales to AT&T et al. who in turn complained about bandwidth use and demanded that the iTunes store be Wi-Fi only. All speculation of course.
Here's something from Engadget. Basically the labels consider music downloads over cellular services a "premium" feature and want more money for it as a result. Apple's not about to charge people more for it, it doesn't make any sense from their perspective.Originally posted by: aphex

RIAA? I was under the impression on the first gen, Apple required wifi to keep AT&T's Edge bandwidth down.
Can you point me to an article on that? I can't seem to find any.
