USA Today spoke with Steve Jobs about the impending App Store launch that is rumored to launch at 9 am PT on Thursday, July 10th.

Jobs reveals that 500 applications will be launching on Thursday and that it is "the biggest launch" of his career. Apps will be available from MySpace, Facebook, AOL, eBay, SEGA and many more companies. One called Pandora allows you to create custom internet radio stations:

Jobs: Pandora is already available on other phones from AT&T (T) and Sprint, (S) for a monthly fee. On the iPhone, it is free. That makes it "a credible alternative to broadcast (radio)," in part because iPhones can be plugged into car stereos, founder Tim Westergren says.

According to Jobs, at launch, 25% (~125) of the apps will be free while 90% of the remaining applications will be $9.99 or less.

Sweet! What apps are you looking forward to?

I'm waiting on the new iPod Touches to be released before I even start looking at this stuff. I don't want to be tempted to buy an older model right now. hehe

Really? I'm seeing a lot of useful apps on there right now.

There are the ones that are charge for apps, like the games, and OmniFocus, etc... but most of what I've been looking at has been free, or super cheap (like $5).

So I'm curious,

There are two links, iPhone Applications and iPod Touch applications. Does that mean they aren't interchangeable? Because if the iPhone apps won't run on iPod Touch that would suck a lot.

I really think someone should make an RTS for the iphone... it's one of the few types of games that I think would really work well with your fingers... They should bring C&C Red Alert or something to the iphone. (Or Age of Empires, although it's microsoft soo....)

lol, ya never know when u need a flashlight?

Actually that'd be way handy, I use my iPhone as a flashlight all the time
Ditto. You never know when you'll end up walking somewhere in the dark and a bit of extra light from your screen will come in handy.

While true, you can do a simple "about:blank" in MobileSafari and save the bookmark on your Home screen. Done, for free!

On a side note, I did find a free version.

Most of the stuff that I'm interested in is free... Evernote, Twitteriffic, Pandora, AIM, Facebook, Myspace, ToDo, Yelp!, Where, Movies.app, etc...

The ones that are charge for apps, are nice, but I won't be buying unless I have a use for them.

It's a bit more complicated than that. The latest version of Flashlight from Installer.app for example not only makes a white screen, but turns off the light sensor and cranks the screen to maximum brightness so that you get the most light possible out of your iPhone. It's the little things that make a whole app worth it.

Well, then I guess that's worth the .99c if you want those features.

There's a free version called Light that has the same features, so there's no paying involved.

Not mentioned in the lifehacker link, but also really good free apps (IMO):
- Pandora (based on Pandora.com) - really nice implementation, uses the iTunes album cover art - streams stations fine even with Edge. Far more added functionality than the run of the mill "waste screen space with our re-packaged web site" (cough BofA) BS that is out there. Its my new car radio.
- Shazam (listens to music then IDs it for you) - tried it on recordings of TV live performances (audience noise and all) and it was ID'ing the album version of the songs perfectly. Using it a lot more than I thought I would, probably will ease up when the novelty wears off, but still damn cool.

On the paid side, I really like:
- OmniFocus ($20) - mainly useful for those who use the "Getting Things Done" method, synchs with the mac application of the same name via iDisk or a WebDav server (I hacked up one on my local network, eg. 192.168.1.2/omnifocus/, does the job at home without paying for a static IP, iDisk/MobileMe, or paid external WebDav). I'm always impressed by how clean / well written OmniGroup mac software is, and iPhone OmniFocus is no exception, lots of nice little touches (eg. ability to attach pictures/voice memos to tasks).
