No kidding this is an absolute HUGE feat, I'm curious how the Phandroid dudes will spin this one. They always seem to figure out new ways to discredit Apple

Simce you dragged this Phandroid strawman into this, what OS has majority of Japanese smartphone market? No prizes for right answer.

So when you lose the "hottest selling phone" discussion, you resort to which OS has the largest market share?

Sweet move.

Let me guess, Android. And it's on a hundred craptacular phones made by 30 some manufacturers...

I really don't understand the hate you seem to have for Apple.

Samsung is just as bad if not worse, these are corporate monsters and you're emotionally invested in them, makes no sense to me... I used to hate Apple, then I grew up and stopped hating things, moved on to people and things that mattered. A phone or OS matters that much to you?

I can pretty well predict every post you make will be some form of pro Android anti Apple spin. It's hilarious to see grown ups get so invested in this stuff, it's like watching a motorhead in shop class argue about Ford VS Chevy or Honda VS Toyota.

Hell, I'm amazed smartphones with any OS do what they do at all, and they both Android & iOS devices actually work well, it's seriously cool as hell.

Predictable iPhan rant. If we are to be so proud that an American company has top smartphone in Japan, why not be proud that an American company has top smartphone OS in Japan? Aside from being a blind Apple fanboi?

Yep, you're absolutely right, I'm the biggest Apple fanboi on these forums...

LOL.

What tech do you think the iPhone needs in order to remain successful in Japan?

TV tuner. Thinness. Color options. Felica. But I think the bulk of the tech would be found in the software and services department. Not sure if Apple's software acceptance is still draconian but I can see the Japanese Android handset manufacturers localizing their handsets far faster than Apple and reaping the benefit. Japan never really warmed to the PC like they did the phone. By that I mean they do literally everything on it. From email to television to whatever. Apple's iPhone was revolutionary but they are bound to trip up and not realize it until it's too late. With Jobs dead, leadership will definitely be lacking in the innovation and confidence department at Apple.

Gee I dunno the one that has 18 bazillion different handsets? Android will always have the majority overall lead. Seeing how many phones they currently have on the market that's not really much of a feat. I mean what's their competition again exactly?

The feat is getting phone manufacturers to release a bazillion phones with your OS and services and get it a majority overall lead. You make it sound like a flaw with Android when in reality it is the POINT of Android.

Can you just start a thread extolling the virtues of Android?

Seriously, do you think there's a single poster on the board that doesn't know Google's strategy and business model?

Every stinking thread turns out like this, I'm tired of it and I think everyone else is too.

We had a happy little thread going, and bam... "You're a sheep', 'Well you're a Phan?"

I thought it was pretty cool Apple has the #1 phone in Japan, and fully realize the market is fluid as hell and things change.

I think one of the biggest factors making that happen was when iOS 5 came out and you no longer needed iTunes for activation and syncing. I read some time ago that although almost 100% of Japanese adults have a mobile phone, less than 30% have a PC at home anymore, most have switched to a phone only. Before iOS 5, having a computer was almost mandatory if you had an iPhone. With iOS and iClould, it isn't. The only time I hook my iPhone to a computer anymore is to charge it.

With one huge, glaring exception. AFAIK you still can't put your own media on Apple devices without a computer. So yes, you can be PC free, but that means no using content that isn't from iTunes or an official app in the store.

Apple always had a good market in Japan. Thanks to the massive animation and comic book market in Japan, Apple Macs were always a choice for most artists and studios... the small ones and solo artist at least.

I'm not surprised if Japanese people have come to accept iPhones so quickly. They've liked Apple, only in a different avatar before the iPhone came.
