The big deterrent to me is that it sounds kludgy just, well, making a phone call. No voice recognition is ridiculous, and going through six steps to make a routine call seems way excessive. No MMS would also annoy me. I am also at a loss to understand why a phone that also happens to be an iPod (and an excellent one) can't use songs as ringtones. As a longtime Verizon guy I am also in no hurry to move to AT&T and EDGE. I will wait for Gen 2 or a quality (e.g., Samsung) imitation.</end quote></div>
Since it's not really a "smart" phone (no 3rd party software), there is no reason why the focus shouldn't be on the iPhone as a phone. My Q is a phone first and a PDA second, and I appreciate that.
I think Apple is missing out on a huge opportunity with not allowing iTunes songs to be purchased on the iPhone. Secondary to that not letting iTunes songs be custom ringtones. I'm cruising down the road, listening to the radio - bam! A new song comes on...I like it! I pull out my iPhone...oh, wait, I can't buy it on the iPhone. I'll buy it later. Oops, I forgot. Huge impulse buyer's market there.
