If you mean codes like E70 or F15, those are internal designations for the projects, which enthusiasts like to throw around so they know which generation they are referring to. BMW still calls it a 2017 BMW (model) and then a 2018 BMW (model) for the public.

Nah, just seemingly arbitrary numerical designations that don't really refer to anything beyond a 'design matrix plus $thing' style, like 'F150, F250, F350' Why is the zero there? Why does the 5 stay the same? Ford doesn't have a F50, a F120, F370, etc, so why even use those numbers? Why not F1, F2, F3?

BMW does maintain a more rational naming (numbering?) convention, with X3, 5, Z series, etc... but it's still a little wonky.

10th anniversary since the original iPhone launched. And they did keep the sequence for the normal iPhone range (up to 8 now), the 10 is a special edition. Really it's just the prototype flagship for all the changes they have been saving up. Now they are close to parity in features compared to Android flagships for the first time in a while.

Lol yeah it's true. I like how people flock over like it's the most shiny awesome thing, but a year later it's not so nice ans shiny anymore eh, they have to get the next one. That's right feed that consumerism machine!

Then again I know people who do that with vehicles. They buy a brand new 4x4 pickup truck and a couple years later they're trading it for the next model.

Well first, I was talking about year to year with new iterations of the same model product - it is not given an entirely new name like iphone 7 vs iphone X is. Vehicles are referred to by year within each model. An iphone with minimal upgrades (similar to an F150 getting upgrades year to year) does not deserve a whole new designation like F150 to F250 - reserved for a whole new need/purpose. That's like an iphone 6 to iphone 6+ (2 different models based on need). If an iphone 7 is updated for the following year, it does not need to be given a random name.

Secondly, you're misinformed about BMW. In no way are those still the "present" years. Those codes are created internally as projects spring up. The prior codes within a class have end-of-life. The E70 was from 2007-2013, for example. F15 is its replacement, and has been for awhile, also near end of life cycle, so an entirely new-looking X5 with new tech will spring up soon.

Can't say the same for phones that barely improve year to year. And even if they do, it's still an iphone model, which leads me back to my original point, all you have to do is name it as the newest using the year.

They really should just stay with the year with all product releases. Iphone 2017 or '17. None of this 360 or One or X or S and then come out with something else that makes zero sense chronologically when people talk about them years from now and can't figure out what came first.

makes sense. iirc that's what dell did, kinda. a 30" monitor in 2007 became a 3007 (i think). if apple still do different sizes then (seeing as people like the latest stuff) just have year first then size. e.g 1705 (5") 1706 (6"). plus they can be snooty at other iphone users next year when they hear "mine's a 170.", they can say "stop! 17 was last years model. loser!"
