^ you might be onto something - if asked what phone you have, you'd have to say 2016. Marketers don't want you feeling inferior haha. Guess what though - I think only Apple fans care since they seem to be buying up whatever phone product they put out there regardless.

Nah, just seemingly arbitrary numerical designations that don't really refer to anything beyond a 'design matrix plus $thing' style, like 'F150, F250, F350' Why is the zero there? Why does the 5 stay the same? Ford doesn't have a F50, a F120, F370, etc, so why even use those numbers? Why not F1, F2, F3?

BMW does maintain a more rational naming (numbering?) convention, with X3, 5, Z series, etc... but it's still a little wonky.

From a BWM series matrix:
E87 1 series (2004 - present) includes 116i, 118i, 120i, 130i, 118d, 120d.

On top of quite a few errors in that copy paste the truly weird thing was when the 3 series coupe became a 4 series, and then there was a 4 series 4 door gran coupe after... literal WTF. Add to that the numbers having no relation to the engine anymore but just being some kinda hierarchical thing relative to power, but that makes little sense when there are diesels sold in that market... Apple actually seems to be pretty rational in comparison.

I really don't care because in a year everyone will trade it in for the next iPhone that fixed all the issues. There won't be a point over those 365 that I will need to refer to the specific model and will plainly call it an iPhone. "Hey, did you get the new iPhone?" "Hey, how's the iPhone's facial recognition? " "Does the oled on your iPhone work well?" To that point, I also won't use the word super to describe the screen or FaceID or Animogi.

It's "iPhone" not "the iPhone" or "an iphone". Apparently. Or something.

It was always marketed that way. For Mac OS, X is the Roman numeral ten.

If you mean that Mac OS X releases were advertised with big cat names, then that is correct too. For advertising purposes, a cat name was preferred over "Mac OS X 10.5" which is a bit unwieldy.
Which sort of explains why it's iPhone X instead of say iPhone 10th Anniversary Edition.
