Yeah, the whole "Anandtech is dead" thread was a bit awkward given where we are. Anandtech's mobile reviews have always taken longer, and given the breadth of releases, they can't possibly review everything. Also, keep in mind that they'd likely push reviewers to focus on more popular items as they'll pull in more views... especially if reviews take a long time to execute and write.
Yeah but by the time anandtech reviews anything we have already read in depth reviews elsewhere.

Original estimate was 16-24 Nov for the arrival, but I got my shipping confirmation this morning and UPS tracking is showing an 06 Nov delivery date.

One of my coworkers had an estimated 11/10 delivery, and he's getting it on 11/3 (release). So, it looks like the carriers may have been underestimating stock, or they had enough cancellations.

From the looks of it, it's more that Apple got a better handle on production than it was expecting. Definitely no trouble selling as many as it can make.

For example: at my local Apple store, 20-ish people were lining up tonight before the store had even closed. They're waiting 11 hours... that's wild. Haven't seen that kind of queue for years.

I'm not sure how Verizon managed to do it, but they've made activation even more of a pain. Previous years, I've just used Google to call Verizon to activate the phone, but you can't do that anymore. Not to mention, activation failed even though Verizon told me the device was good to go!

Oh, and of course, since Apple already released 11.1, and the X ships without it, you have to update to it before you can restore from a back-up. That's what I get for keeping up to date.

What if the backup is on an iOS version older than what ships on the X? Will it restore from backup in that instance?

When I got my wife's iPhone 8 directly from Verizon, it was super easy to set up. It already had her phone number in there and when booting it just verified that it was the number I wanted to use to set up the phone with.

I'm not sure what it will do if the back-up is too old. I don't think I've ever run into that problem as I usually keep my phones up to date.

Mine knew what number and stuff that it needed to be, but it just keeps failing activation. I went through and restored my back-up, and it said it was going to activate again, but yet again... my old iPhone still has service and my new one doesn't.

EDIT:

Apparently, something not-so-good is up with my account and the activation. The rep is having to talk to some of the higher-ups to figure it out.

My iPhone X is finally here. Have to install iOS 11.1 update and restore data first... the struggle is real.

I got a tozo screen protector and this thing went on okay but one corner was bubbling and not staying down. Then I turned the phone, and you could see a lot more was up than it looked like with the screen off.

I've never used a screen protector before, does it take them some time to "stick" to the screen or anything? Or should it be fine from the get go? It fit it perfectly though.

Got it. The setup from old phone and the X is really seamless and pretty impressive. Thing is a fingerprint magnet though. Barely touched it and there are marks all over.

Yeah it was pretty cool how you just put them next to eachother. I've only ever switched from iPhone 4 to iPhone 6 so that's my only other experience lol.

I bought mine at Target. Walked in and there was only one X left. Problem was it took two hours waiting for Sprint to activate the phone, and I was the lucky one. An AT&T customer was told that his 256gb X couldn't be activated AT ALL, and he will have to return later in the day - That was after he waited two hours!

Amazed by phone, so far.

My AT&T iPhoneX activated okay. I got a Spigen liquid crystal case for it. Liking the phone so far. Notch hasn’t bothered me. But quite a few apps not yet optimized for the taller aspect ratio. Unlocking the phone is kinda annoying so far. Have to wake the phone the swipe up from very bottom of screen while being sure phone is facing me properly. Definitely not as smooth as just pressing a finger print button.

So, it might be a good idea if we post some tricks we've learned about the phone since this phone is probably one of the most different that Apple has created in a while.
  • If you haven't found it already, holding side button (i.e. what used to be called the power button) + volume up is how you turn off the phone. Holding down the side button, which was the old method, now activates Siri.
  • You can turn the screen on by either hitting the side button or tapping anywhere on the screen.
I haven't found anything else that's super useful, but I'll make a note of it if I do.

I also made sure to do what I said I'd do when I got the phone... send people an animated poo animoji. It took me a while to get it activated, but once my 7+ started not working right on cellular (it was still active though), I assumed activation would work... and it did. So, I didn't have to wait 24 hours like Verizon said... thankfully.

I used a Spigen one, and I ended up taking it off. I tried to put it on when the screen was off, and that was my first mistake. It's simply way too hard to see where the screen is, and I ended up being off by a bit. You can't (and shouldn't) reapply a screen protector, so I just decided to go without it. I heard that Apple will put one on for you, and they do it using a machine to ensure it's in the right spot. It's tempting, but I heard it's like $30-40.

So they just now added the option to order through verizon without being "pre-approved" by the carrier. I'm gonna go to the Apple store today and check to see if they have any stock of the space grey 256 and if they don't ill order it online.

All the reviews have been amazing.... I think this phone is all its cracked up to be and more.

The no-home button interface feels a lot more intuitive than having a button down there. It's crazy how quickly I got used to it and how natural it feels. I guess it's kind of like how when I first got my MacBook Pro I could not get used to multiple desktops but now it's second nature and just feels so natural, and I feel more efficient on my laptop than a desktop now when working. The no-home button interface for multitasking just feels so natural to me, I think that is where I notice it feeling a lot more natural than tapping the home button twice.

Does anyone know of a good knock-off case of the official Apple silocone cases? I got a Spigen case that is a good case but it's a little thicker than I'd like, and I was just in the mall and tried out one of the official Apple cases and I really liked how it fit and the feel of it. I couldn't see myself spending $40 on a case though. I also wasn't sure if I really liked the bottom part that is like completely cut out instead of having separate cutouts for the connector and speakers.

Went to best buy and they only sell the CDMA/GSM version (the good one) but they have no stock and require you to finance. They did say I could finance it as 3 payments of ~$400 but they refused to sell it upfront.

Apple store has no stock and they refused to sell me anything but the gimped AT&T version.

I guess either I have to wait for best buy to get stock or buy the gimped version. I think I'll wait.

The apple cases are worth the money IMO. Especially the leather ones. I have a product red leather case for my iPhone 7 that has been awesome. You can usually get deals on Apple cases about 6 months after the new phone is out, but you'll have to pay full price now.

Whenever I see those plastic cases they always look so janky

I'm not interested in leather cases. As I said I'm looking for a silocone one.

In some ways (feel) the silicone ones are better.... but they don't age like the leather ones, which get a nice dark patina after a few months of use. They are priced much better than the leather ones tho.

So, what do you guys think of FaceID? It has been pretty decent so far... pretty much as good as Windows Hello (I have it on my Surface Pro). Although, I did find that it just would not work after I woke up and tried to unlock my phone. I don't know if my face was in a weird position or something, but I tried to mimic it, and I couldn't get it to fail again.

I also think I need to turn that True Tone off. The screen looks super yellow-ish, and I'm guessing that it's True Tone. Although, the weird part is that I don't know if it's a screen problem or not, because if I tilt the screen off axis, then it looks like I'd expect. For example, on a message conversation, the background looks like a dull yellowish white, but if I tilt the phone back, it goes back to being a normal white. So, I turned off True Tone, and it looks better; however, it's far from perfect. Now, if I tilt the phone, instead of being correct, it gets bluer. That leads me to believe that the whites look better with True Tone on when being tilted because of the extra blue.
