iPhone X starting at $999

Just curious, who is going to get one of these things, 64GB is $999, I bet the 256GB version will be $1299/$1399.

I really didn't see anything "wow" worthy at the event either.

Talking poop don't count.

I also wonder, isn't it easier now for whomever to unlock the phone? All they have to do is point the phone at the person, and it unlocks.
There doesn't need to be anyone touching it, as you would do with the fingerprint scan.

Also, if you get a black eye, or have some kind of an alergy (bee stings or whatever), doesn't that make it so you can't unlock the phone in an emergency?

P.S, yes, it was funny that FaceID didn't work for that Apple guy on stage.

Expensive to be sure, but no matter the price it's nice to see Apple finally make a modern looking smartphone... Although that notch is really bad, especially if videos are just going to play around it pretending like it doesn't exist. I can't imagine that's how it will normally work, had to have just been for the promo video for the event to emphasize the screen to bezel ratio.

The premium over the 8 is mainly for the OLED screen for those that consider it a must have feature, and for some people the status of owning the top model.

If the FaceID doesn't prove to be terrible and they don't use another 28nm taiwanese intel modem then I might get it.



I was not very encouraged by their presentation where it failed to unlock for the guy presenting. Frankly, the fact that it uses infrared light and cameras probably means it can be easily fouled but not easily tricked. It also probably means it has a higher failed unlock rate than TouchID, which is very bad. I can imagine several different scenarios where infrared light is absorbed and where this thing might fail to unlock.


This could be one of the best or one of the worst iPhones ever made. I don't know which yet.

I missed all the phone stuff so I have to check it out and see the differences between 8 and X, but considering my 6 is on it's last legs, I'll probably just get an 8 because waiting another month using my 6 may not be feasable.

The 6 has the same sensor as the 5s (a very old one). I have the 7 and touchID works awesome. Even when your hands are moist, it works fine.


I also have my doubts about this FaceID but if anybody can do it, it's apple. At least they aren't doing it all with software and normal cameras like Samsung, LG, etc. They did install a laser (the 'dot projector') and an infrared camera so it should work fine at night.

I love my 6s touchid. I just bought a 2016 iPad Pro which for no explicable reason they put in the first gen touch sensor and it's a huge difference.

I have very mixed thoughts on the phone. Happy to see a top of the line OLED, but not really liking how the screen is cut off for videos. It would be perfectly acceptable if those become black bars. Also wouldn't hurt to put a touch sensor on the back as part of the Apple logo so you don't have to use FaceID. My 7 Plus contract is nearly up and I'm on the fence about the X or just going with the 8.

I love my 6s touchid. I just bought a 2016 iPad Pro which for no explicable reason they put in the first gen touch sensor and it's a huge difference.

Well I have a 6 and have had it since they released and it sucks ass. And my battery is f'ed up too and my phone will cut off randomly even when it's not drained and/or it reports wrong battery percentages. And once it cuts off, I have to plug it in to get it turned back on, and sometimes it will say it's at like 100%. I don't know if I can last 2 more months with this crap until the X comes out, even though I don't use my phone too much.

But the past 2 days it's cut off while listening to music at the gym after like 40 minutes. Granted I was texting and shit as well, but it's that messed up.

TouchID works on my 6 most of the time, but it's a bit slow. I've heard they sped it up quite a bit in newer versions and I'd really like to upgrade but can't justify the cost so the battery in my 6 will probably get replaced. Next year they may have OLED in the cheaper version if it's not discontinued altogether.

Unfortunately, for the X, I can think of many scenarios where faceID would just not be user friendly.

This video made me feel better about the notch and full screen videos. Check it out around 2:20 or so.

It basically does exactly what the current iPhone does. It either will fill out the full screen real estate, or it will scale to fit the actual aspect ratio and it includes the notch so it doesn't go behind it. That was pretty much my only concern and now that I see how it works I'll probably end up getting one.

My only concern is my 6 battery is pretty f'd up right now and I don't know if I can deal with it until November.

As for the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus I skipped that generation. I predicted its 1 GB RAM would become problematic rather quickly, and it turned out that prediction was true. I'm not enamoured with the 2 GB of the iPhone 8 either. That's the same amount of RAM as in my wife's iPhone 6s we got back in 2015.
